Russia Cuts Business Ties with Turkey

  • Russia plans to retaliate against Turkey for the downing of a warplane by imposing sanctions, cutting economic ties and scrapping major investment projects.
  • Russia has already restricted tourism, left Turkish trucks stranded at the border and announced the confiscation of large quantities of Turkish food imports.
  • Dmitry Medvedev has ordered his government to also draft sanctions against Turkey within the next two days in response to the downing of the Russian Su-24.

US FDA Warns Dr Reddy's of Import Ban

  • The United States Food and Drug Administration has warned homegrown pharma major Dr. Reddy's Laboratories that if the company fails to take corrective actions at three of its manufacturing facilities-Srikakulam, Miryalaguda and Duvvada-it may lead to imposition of an import ban on these units.

Five Bank Hired for Managing Coal India Stake Divestment

  • Five Indian investment banks including ICICI Securities and SBI Capital have been hired to manage a 10 per cent stake divestment in state-owned Coal India.
  • The stake sale, valued at about $3.2 billion at the current stock price, is part of government's aim to raise Rs. 69,500 crore by March by selling minority stakes in government-owned companies.
  • Other banks who have been hired to manage the offering are Axis Capital, JM Financial and Kotak Investment Banking.

NASA to Replace Hubble with James Webb Telescope

  • The US space agency has successfully installed the first of 18 flight mirrors onto the James Webb Space Telescope, beginning a critical piece of the observatory’s construction to replace the Hubble Space Telescope by 2018.
  • After being pieced together, the 18 primary mirror segments will work together as one large 21.3-foot mirror.
  • The James Webb Space Telescope will be the premier astronomical observatory of the next decade.

Dhanush Missile Successfully Test-fired

  • India successfully test-fired its nuclear capable Dhanush ballistic missile.
  • Dhanush ballistic missile was test-fired with a strike range of 350 km.
  • It is a naval variant of India's indigenously-developed Prithvi missile.
  • Dhanush missile is capable of carrying conventional as well as nuclear payload of 500 kg.
  • The missile can hit both land and sea-based targets under 350 km range.
  • It has already been inducted in the armed forces.
