Ecuador Declares State of Emergency

  • Ecuador braced for a destructive season of weather caused by the El Nino phenomenon by declaring a 60-day state of emergency in its most vulnerable provinces.
  • Government data indicate that the water level along Ecuador's Pacific coast is abnormally high, which puts infrastructure near the shoreline at risk.
  • The emergency is in effect in 17 of the country's 24 provinces.

Penguin Numbers on the Rise

  • Shrinking glaciers are leading to the birth of more Adelie penguins in the East Antarctica region.
  • The findings show that in the last 14,000 years, the population of Adelie penguins has seen a 135-fold increase as additional breeding sites become exposed by retreating glaciers.
  • This population explosion suggests that current environmental conditions are more favourable for Adelie penguins than they were at the end of the last ice age.

Ice Cap in Iceland Gaining Mass

  • According to a glaciologist, the visible snow cover is typical for this time of the year, compared to conditions during the past 15-20 years. Compared to the reference period of 1961-1990, snow cover is almost certainly less than average in the highland and mountain regions above 400 meters in elevation.
  • The melting of seasonal snow cover accentuates the boundaries of Iceland’s permanent ice caps.
  • All ice caps in Iceland have been retreating rapidly and losing volume since 1995. In October 2015, scientists showed that the Hofsjökull ice cap had gained mass according to their ground-based measurements.

Govt Approves Subsidy for Cane Farmers

  • In the first ever direct subsidy payment to farmers, the government decided to pay sugarcane growers Rs. 4.50 per quintal for the cane they will sell to loss-making millers, a move that will cost Rs. 1,147 crore to the exchequer.
  • The Cabinet decided to give a production-linked subsidy directly to cane growers, as export subsidy, which was provided in the last two sugar seasons 2013-14 and 2014-15 to millers, was questioned by many countries at the WTO.
  • India, the world's second largest sugar producer, is all set to produce surplus sweetener for the sixth straight year at 26-27 million tonnes in 2015-16.

Mary Kom Picked for AIBA's Olympic Test Event

  • Olympic bronze-medallist M. C. Mary Kom is the lone woman boxer in a six-strong Indian team which has been selected by the International Boxing Association to compete in its Test event for next year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
  • The Indian boxers have been selected by International Boxing Association AIBA to participate in the Test Event to be held at Rio De Janeiro, Brazil from the 4-6 December 2015.
  • The Team: Rohit Tokas, Manoj Kumar, Devanshu Jaiswal, Parveen Kumar, Satish Kumar and M. C. Mary Kom
