Fast-melting Glacier Can Change World's Coastlines

  • A new study has revealed that a vast ice sheet in northeast Greenland has begun a phase of speeded-up ice loss, contributing to destabilization that will cause global sea-level rise.
  • A team of scientists have found that since 2012 warmer air and sea temperatures have caused the Zachariae Isstrom ice sheet to "retreat rapidly along a downward-sloping, marine-based bed.
  • The Zachariae Isstrom glacier holds enough water to trigger a half-meter rise in ocean levels around the world.

Forex Reserves Decline by $1.9 Billion

  • Due to a fall in foreign currency assets by $2.4 billion. Latest data from RBI showed that the foreign exchange reserves fell $1.9 billion to $351.7 billion for the week ended November 6.

NCAER Lowers GDP Forecast

  • NCAER marginally lowered the GDP forecast at 7.4 per cent because of slowdown in agriculture due to deficient monsoon.
  • As per NCAER, the industrial growth continues to gather strength while the outlook for the services remains mixed.
  • The Finance Ministry had pegged the growth rate for the financial year 2015-16 at around 8.1-8.5 per cent.

Russia Pays Doping Price

  • Russia has been provisionally suspended from track and field over accusations of state-sponsored doping as the IAAF scrambled to salvage the sport's credibility just nine months out from the Rio Olympics.
  • Russia will not be entitled to host the 2016 World Race Walking Cup (Cheboksary) and 2016 World Junior Championships.
