Russia Will Not Conduct Ground Operation in Syria

  • As per Vladimir Putin, Russia would not deploy ground troops to Syria, where it has been conducting air strikes against what it says are Islamic State targets.
  • The Russian President had last month received parliamentary approval to launch an air campaign in the war-torn country, but authorities have staunchly denied they would send any ground troops.
  • Russia has bombed command posts and training camps of what it says are radical “terrorists,” backing a ground offensive by the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

SEBI Fines 34 Companies

  • Market regulator SEBI has imposed a fine of close to Rs. 50 lakh on 34 companies in the first half of the current fiscal for allegedly failing to resolve investor complaints.
  • The regulator imposed the monetary penalty of Rs. 49.50 lakh in April-September of 2015-16 through adjudication proceedings.
  • SEBI had fined 40 firms about Rs. 66 lakh on the same count a year ago.

Scientists Create Virtual Rat Brain

  • Scientists have created a virtual rat brain made up of 30,000 neurons, 55 layers of cells and 207 different neuron subtypes.
  • For 10 years, a global initiative called the Blue Brain Project - hosted at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) - has been attempting to digitally create a section of juvenile rat brain.
  • Getting a full, high-resolution picture of all the features and activity of the neurons within a brain region and the circuit-level behaviours of neurons is a major challenge.

Bihar Minister Quits after Sting Operation

  • Ahead of the first phase poll, a cabinet minister of the Nitish Kumar government resigned after he was seen taking bribe in a sting operation on a video which went viral on social media.
  • After the alleged sting operation captioned “X-files”, Minister for excise and prohibition Awadhesh Kumar Kushwaha was asked to resign by the Chief Minister.
  • The Minister faxed his resignation which was forwarded to the Governor for acceptance.
