Real Truce has Begun in Ukraine

  • According to President Petro Poroshenko, a "real truce" has begun in eastern Ukraine but a long-lasting peace with pro-Kremlin insurgents would still take some time.
  • This is still not peace. This is not the end of the war.
  • The end of war will come when every patch of Ukrainian soil is liberated from the enemy, the occupant, the aggressor. But this is not simply a ceasefire, this is a real truce.

Nobel Prize 2015 in Chemistry

  • The Nobel Prize 2015 in Chemistry jointly went to Tomas Lindahl, Paul Modrich and Aziz Sancar.
  • Sweden's Tomas Lindahl, American Paul Modrich and Turkish-born Aziz Sancar won the prestigious prize for their work on mapping how cells repair damaged DNA, giving insight into cancer treatments.

Walmart Plans to Open Five Stores in Himachal

  • Retail giant Walmart plans to open five stores with an investment of around Rs. 65 crore in Himachal Pradesh.
  • Walmart has some collection centres already functioning in the state but now it proposes to expand its network and explore investments to set up five Walmart stores with an investment of USD 10 million generating employment to 2,000 persons.
  • The company has proposed to set up stores in districts like Shimla, Solan, Mandi, Hamipur and Kangra.

E-commerce Increases Business for SMEs

  • According to a report, online marketplaces are fuelling growth for small and medium enterprises in India. SMEs contribute about 17% to India's GDP (gross domestic product) and the report highlighted that the scale of businesses and profits have increased after they embraced e-commerce platforms.
  • As per the report, 46% of SMEs reported an increase in business through listing on online marketplaces, while those using internet for business saw 51% higher revenues and 49% more profit.
  • About 85% of the SMEs who adapted to the e-commerce model realized that it was a cost-effective medium to grow sales and a majority of them reported 60-80% reduction in distribution, marketing and sales spend to get incremental business.

NASA Completes Heat Shield Testing

  • NASA has successfully completed key heat shield tests for the future exploration spacecrafts that will scout the Red Planet for signs of life.
  • NASA’s Adaptive Deployable Entry and Placement Technology (ADEPT) is a mechanically-deployable heat shield concept using carbon fabric, a flexible heat shield that expands to open like an umbrella.
  • During the tests, the surface temperatures on the test article reached 1,704 degrees Celsius.

  • The Indo-Swiss tennis pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis earned a hard-fought victory to move into the women's doubles quarterfinals of the China Open.
