US to Use Turkey’s Airbase

  • Turkey will let the US carry out airstrikes against the Islamic State terror group from a key military base near the Syrian border.
  • The agreement was finalised between President Barack Obama and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
  • The use of the Incirlik airbase broadens the US military`s ability to strike IS targets.
  • Turkey has been in the coalition since the beginning but was not fully cooperating due to its differing views over the Syrian crisis.

Major Uranium Reserves Found

  • A joint research team of the city-headquartered Atomic Minerals Directorate (AMD) and Osmania University has discovered significant quantity of uranium reserves in the Srisailam forests.
  • The quality of the uranium mineralization discovered in these two areas is superior and comparable to the one available in Canada and Australia, team members informed.
  • Earlier, the AMD had discovered uranium reserves in pockets of Mahbubnagar, Karimnagar and Nalgonda districts in Telangana and Guntur and Kadapa districts in Andhra Pradesh. Chennakesavula Gutta and Padra are the latest addition to the vast uranium resources in the two Telugu states. Officials have estimated that AP has about five lakh tonnes of uranium reserves, mostly in the Kadapa super basin while Telangana has about a lakh tonnes of the nuclear resource. The latest discovery has added to the country's nuclear fuel security. AP and Telangana together account for 25 per cent of India's uranium reserves.

RIL, Tata Motors, SBI among World's Largest Companies

  • According to a list compiled by Fortune, seven Indian companies are among the world's 500 largest companies. The list is topped by retail giant Walmart.
  • The Indian companies on the 2015 Fortune Global 500 list are Indian Oil ranked, Reliance Industries, Tata Motors, State Bank of India, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum and Oil and Natural Gas.
  • The world's 500 largest companies generated USD 31.2 trillion in revenues and USD 1.7 trillion in profits in 2014.
  • Walmart which has topped the list is followed by Chinese petroleum refining giant Sinopec Group on the second spot, Netherlands based Royal Dutch Shell (3), China National Petroleum (4) and Exxon Mobil (5).

NASA’s Kepler Mission Confirms First Earth-sized Planet

  • NASA confirmed the discovery of the first near-Earth-size planet, Kepler-452b, in the “habitable zone” around a sun-like star.
  • The US space agency announced the major findings made by its planet-hunting mission, the Kepler Space Telescope.
  • According to NASA, the newly discovered Kepler-452b is the smallest planet to date discovered orbiting in the habitable zone, the area around a star where liquid water could pool on the surface of an orbiting planet, of a G2-type star, like our sun.
  • The confirmation of Kepler-452b brings the total number of confirmed planets to 1,030.

States Permitted to Release Life Convicts

  • As per the Supreme Court, state governments now could grant remission and set free life convicts whose cases have not been investigated by the CBI or those not probed under central laws.
  • With this, it has lifted its July 9, 2014 interim order restraining state governments from releasing convicts upon grant of remission.
  • As per an apex court constitution bench headed by Chief Justice H. L. Dattu, state governments cannot grant remission in cases where life sentence means entire life or where the term of the sentence has been specified like 20 years or 25 years in rape and murder cases.
  • The court also said the relaxation to the July 9, 2014 order would not be applicable in respect of the seven convicts in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
