The US and Cuba Open Embassies after 54 Years

  • Cuba and the United States formally renewed diplomatic ties, as embassies reopened in their respective capitals, a powerful move towards burying decades of enmity between the Cold War foes.
  • The historic turnaround between two bitter foes has come about at breakneck pace, in just a matter of months since the two sides agreed to bury the hatchet and work together as equals.
  • For the first time since 1961, the Cuban flag will fly over Havana`s newly upgraded embassy in Washington.

India and Russia Sign Customs Pact

  • With bilateral trade extremely low, India and Russia have initiated steps to remove the hindrances and boost commerce by signing an agreement in the area of customs and moving to liberalize business visas.
  • The bilateral trade during the last year was just $9.51 billion.
  • The two countries have fixed a target of $30 billion to be achieved by 2025.
  • The two countries are also very close to an agreement on dairy exports from India to Russia.

Top 9 Companies Add over Rs. 77k crore in Market Capitalisation

  • The combined market valuation of nine of the top-10 most valued firms rose sharply by Rs. 77,363.23 crore last week, with IT majors TCS and Infosys emerging as the biggest gainers.
  • Barring ONGC from the top-10 list, others like RIL, HDFC Bank, CIL, ITC, Sun Pharma, HDFC and SBI saw gains in their market capitalisation (m-cap).
  • TCS stood at the number one spot in the top-10 most valuable companies chart followed by RIL, HDFC Bank, CIL, ITC, ONGC, Infosys, Sun Pharma, HDFC and SBI.

  • An asteroid with a 90-million tonne platinum-core worth five trillion dollars hurtled past earth.
  • Asteroid UW-158, loaded with rich Platinum, passed 1.5 million miles away from Earth, which is 30 times closer than our nearest planet.

New Material to Increase Solar Cell Efficiency

  • A team of researchers has come up with a solar cell that produces fuel rather than electricity. A material called gallium phosphide enables the solar cell to produce clean fuel ‘hydrogen gas’ from liquid water.

India to Build a Strategic Uranium Reserve

  • After a record production this year, India is working on creating a 'strategic uranium reserve' to ensure its atomic power reactors do not face shortage of the crucial nuclear fuel.
  • The reserve pool could be anywhere between 5000 MT to 15,000 MT which can last for 5-10 years.
  • A proposal for stocking 5000 MT of uranium has been sent to the Cabinet for approval but the cap is likely to increase in the coming years.
