MNREGA World's Largest Public Works Programme

  • As per the World Bank, India's rural employment guarantee programme MNREGA has been ranked as the world's largest public works programme, providing social security net to almost 15 percent of the country's population.
  • India is among the five middle-income countries running the world's largest social safety net programmes.
  • The world's five largest social safety net programmes are all in middle-income countries (China, India, South Africa and Ethiopia) and reach over 526 million people.

IOC and Adani Combine Bid for CNG Licence

  • Indian Oil Corp-Adani Gas combine has bid for a licence to retail CNG in five cities including Haridwar in the 5th round of city gas bidding that saw no bids for as many as eight cities.
  • Besides Haridwar, Indian Oil Corp-Adani combine bid for Tumkur, Belgaum and Dharward districts in Karnataka and Udham Singh Nagar in Uttarakhand.

A Glove to Translate Sign Language

  • Researchers have developed a glove that would translate text and sign languages to facilitate conversation between speech- and hearing-impaired people and those not conversant with sign language.
  • The prototype senses hand movements of the user and identifies them with the 26 letters of the international alphabet.
  • Words and phrases are transmitted by Bluetooth to a mobile device with a preloaded application that displays and reads the signs.

Gennady Padalka Sets Record for Longest Stay in Space

  • Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka has broken the record for the longest time spent in space with a total of 804 days as on July 2015.
  • Gennady beat the old record of 803 days, nine hours and 41 minutes set by fellow cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev (now retired) across six missions from 1998 to 2005.
  • Padalka is the current commander of the International Space Station which has been orbiting the Earth. When Padalka returns to Earth in September with fellow ISS crew members Mikhail Kornienko and Scott Kelly, he will have spent a total of 877 days, or roughly 2.5 years, in space.

  • Top-seeded American twins Bob and Mike Bryan have been eliminated from the men's doubles tournament at Wimbledon.

  • The Bryans have won three doubles titles at the All England Club, and a record 16 Grand Slam titles overall.
