No Change in Cuba Migration Policy

Washington has no current plans to modify its Cuban migration rules after the Cold War foes announced the re-establishment of diplomatic ties from July 20.
A 1966 law gives the US attorney general the discretion to offer any citizen of Cuba admission and permanent residence in the US after spending one year in the country.
According to a fact sheet, the United States "continues to support safe, legal and orderly migration from Cuba," as well as "the full implementation of the existing migration accords" with the Communist-ruled island nation.

Greek Finance Minister Quits

  • Greece`s outspoken Finance Minister resigned, removing a major obstacle to any deal to keep Athens in the euro zone after Greeks voted resoundingly to back the government in rejecting the austerity terms of a bailout.
  • As per reports, Greece`s chief negotiator in aid talks with international creditors, Euclid Tsakalotos, is the frontrunner to become Finance Minister.
  • Tsakalotos had already taken over a prominent role in negotiations with lenders after Varoufakis was sidelined from the talks in April.

Big Reduction in Greenhouse Gases for Oceans Needed

  • As per a study, our oceans need an immediate and substantial reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Otherwise, there will be far-reaching and irreversible impacts on marine ecosystems.
  • Such impact will be more pressing in developing countries. A research team from the Ocean 2015 initiative assesses the latest findings on the risks that climate change poses for our oceans and demonstrates how fundamentally marine ecosystems are likely to change if the human race continues to produce just as much greenhouse gases as before.

RIL to Offload 3.1% Stake in Network18

  • Reliance Industries will offload 3.1% stake in media and entertainment firm Network18 Media and Investments for an estimated Rs. 200 crore to bring down its shareholding to the permitted level of 75%. RIL which had acquired majority holding in Network18 for Rs. 4000 crore through its Independent Media Trust. This move by RIL was to comply with SEBI’s requirement of keeping promoter holding at a maximum of 75%.

Five Supermassive Black Holes Discovered

  • Five supermassive black holes that were hidden by clouds of dust and gas have been discovered by astronomers who suggest that millions of concealed monster black holes exist in the universe.
  • The five black holes are much brighter and more active than previously thought as they rapidly feasted on surrounding material and emitted large amounts of radiation.
  • Such observations were not possible before NuSTAR, which was launched in 2012 and is able to detect much higher energy x-rays than previous satellite observatories.

India and Bangladesh Launch Survey over Nationality

  • India and Bangladesh launched a joint survey to record the "choice of nationality" of 51,584 people in 162 enclaves in each other's territories ahead of the 31st July integration of the land with the respective mainland under the historic Land Boundary Agreement.
  • As per reports, 50 teams began the survey in 111 Indian enclaves in Bangladesh while 25 teams went inside India to carry out the identical task in 51 enclaves in India. The teams are expected to complete the survey by 23rd July.
