Fazle Hasan Abed Wins 2015 World Food Prize

  • Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, the founder of Brac the largest non-governmental organisation on the planet, has been awarded the 2015 World Food prize for his “unparalleled” work on reducing poverty in Bangladesh and 10 other countries.
  • For contributions to social improvement, Fazle Hasan Abed has been bestowed with prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award (2010) and UNDP’s Mahbub Ul Haq Award (also known as Human Development Award) in 2004.

BP set to pay largest environmental fine in US history for Gulf oil spill

  • British Petroleum has agreed to pay a record environmental fine of $18.7bn to settle legal actions brought by the US and several states over the fatal 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
  • The US justice department, along with the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas and Florida, all sued BP for damages not covered by the company’s earlier settlements with businesses and individuals harmed by the worst offshore spill in US history.

India’s Seafood exports touch all time high of Rs. 33,441 crore

  • India’s seafood exports touched an all-time high at 33,441 crore rupees during the financial year 2014-15. The data was released by Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA).
  • The quantity of seafood products exported from India were 10.51 lakh tons during 2014-15. It has increased by 6.86 per cent compared to previous financial year 2013-14.

  • Darshan Jain, an Indian-American teacher has been selected for prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
  • Presently Darshan Jain is director of mathematics at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois. Previously, he had taught mathematics at this institute for eight years.

  • Haryana Government launched ‘Mhara Gaon, Jagmag Gaon’ scheme to provide 24 hour uninterrupted power supply for rural domestic consumers in a phased manner with their active participation.
  • The scheme was launched by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar from Dyalpur village of Kurukshetra district. With this launch, Haryana became first state in the country to provide such an innovative voluntary scheme.
