Mogens Lykketoft Selected as President

  • The UN General Assembly chose a new President, selecting Mogens Lykketoft of Denmark to serve the one-year term.
  • Lykketoft, a politician who is speaker of the Danish Parliament, was the sole candidate put forward by Western European nations for the position that is rotated between regions.
  • Lykketoft will take over the General Assembly`s top post in September.

IEA Warns of 4.3C Temperature Jump

  • The International Energy Agency warned that temperatures could jump by as much as 4.3 degrees Celsius by the end of the century and urged countries to improve their pledges on reducing emissions.
  • As per a report by the IEA, more should be done to reach the goal of keeping the increase in average global temperature below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • The energy sector must play a critical role if efforts to reduce emissions are to succeed. Energy production and use accounts for two-thirds of the world greenhouse gas emissions.

Petrol Price Hiked and Diesel Price Cut

  • Petrol price was hiked by 64 paise a litre, but diesel price was cut by Rs. 1.35 per litre in line with trend in global oil rates.
  • This is the third increase in petrol price since May. However, in case of diesel, the reduction has halted two consecutive increases during last month.
  • Since last price change, there has been an increase in international prices of petrol while international prices of Diesel have shown a downward trend.

May Inflation in Negative Zone

  • Inflation remained in negative territory for the seventh month in May, registering a decline of 2.36 percent on account of subdued prices of food items, fuel and manufactured goods.
  • As per experts, in the coming months the price situation will depend on the progress of monsoon.
  • The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation was (-)2.65 percent in April. It has been in the negative zone since November 2014. Inflation in last May was 6.18 percent.

Comet Lander Philae Calls Home

  • The European Space Agency's Philae comet lander, which dropped onto Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko from the Rosetta spacecraft last November, beamed an 85-second wake-up message to Earth via Rosetta. It was the first signal from Philae in seven months since the probe fell silent in November last after its historic comet landing.

Hockey Teams of Three Nations Qualify for 2016 Olympics

  • Reigning Olympic champions Germany, Argentina and the Netherlands have qualified for the 2016 Olympics as they grabbed the top three places in the men's Hockey World League (HWL) semi-final.
  • Germany emerged champions following their emphatic 4-1 win over host nation Argentina in the final, while the Netherlands crushed Canada.
