Turkey Opens Border to Syrian Refugees

  • Turkey began accepting Syrian refugees fleeing the battle between Kurds and Islamic State (IS) jihadists onto its territory.
  • Turkey had for several days been blocking the Syrians from entering Turkey, saying it would only allow them into the country in the event of a humanitarian tragedy.
  • As per local officials in Akcakale permission had been received from Ankara to allow the refugees to cross into Turkey.
  • As per reports, in all 3000 people were expected to cross over into Turkey.
  • Under an "open-door" policy, Turkey has taken in 1.8 million Syrian refugees since the conflict in Syria erupted in 2011.

Honda Eyes Double Digit Car Sales Growth

  • Buoyed by good sales in India last fiscal, Japanese carmaker Honda is confident of repeating the double-digit growth this year.
  • Present in India through its wholly-owned arm, Honda Cars India, the company had posted a sales growth of 40.73 per cent in domestic market in 2014-15 at 1,89,062 units as against 1,34,339 units in the previous fiscal.

FDI Inflows in Services Sector Increased by 46%

  • With the government taking steps to improve ease of doing business and attracting investments, FDI inflows into the services sector grew by over 46 per cent to $3.25 billion in 2014-15.
  • The services sector, which includes banking, insurance, outsourcing, R&D, courier and technology testing, had received foreign direct investment (FDI) worth $2.22 billion in 2013-14.
  • In step with the growth in FDI in important sectors like services, overall foreign inflows in the country too rose by 27 per cent to $30.93 billion during the previous fiscal. The amount was $24.29 billion in 2013-14.
  • Growth in foreign investments helps improve the country's balance of payments (BoP) situation and strengthen the rupee.

Saturn's Outermost Ring Much Bigger than Thought

  • Astronomers have found that Saturn's faint outermost ring is much bigger than thought, spanning an area of nearly 7,000 times larger than Saturn itself.
  • The ring, called the Phoebe ring, is believed to contain dust and ice particles ejected from Saturn's outer moon ‘Phoebe’.
  • New images taken from NASA's WISE probe suggest the ring is over 270 times the radius of Saturn.
  • The Phoebe ring begins about 3.7 million miles away from Saturn and fans out a 'surprisingly' distant 10 million miles, with a vertical expanse of about 1.5 million miles, making it well over 10 times larger than what was previously believed to be Saturn's largest ring.

India Slip One Place to Fourth Spot

  • India has dropped two points and one place to be at fourth position in the ICC Test team rankings after the drawn match against Bangladesh.
  • It is now a three-way tie for the fourth spot with India, England and Pakistan on 97 points each.
  • However, when the ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point, India are 97.47, England 97.33 and Pakistan 96.75.

Dhiraj Relli Appointed as MD and CEO of HDFC Securities

  • Retail broking firm HDFC Securities has appointed Dhiraj Relli as its MD and CEO.
  • Relli takes over this position from Aseem Dhru, who returns to HDFC Bank as group head, business banking, rural, commodity and agri-lending businesses.
  • Relli has an experience of over two decades in the banking and financial management. He joined HDFC Bank in 2008, before which he worked with Centurion Bank of Punjab and ICICI Bank.
