Greek Crisis Talks End without Breakthrough

  • Greece and its creditors failed to reach a breakthrough at crunch talks despite saying they had made progress towards a deal that could save Athens from a possible euro exit.
  • Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras met European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker in a bid to hammer out a reform plan that could unlock the final 7.2-billion euro ($8.0-billion) tranche of Greece`s bailout.
  • The four-hour meeting ended without any agreement, leaving Greece on its own to face a critical payment to the International Monetary Fund and avoid a possible default.

Lincoln Chafee Joins 2016 US Race

  • Lincoln Chafee, a former US senator and Rhode Island Governor who was a longtime Republican before switching to the Democratic Party, launched his 2016 presidential campaign.
  • Chafee becomes the fourth major politician to join the Democratic nomination battle.
  • Chafee will be an underdog in the nomination race, which is led by frontrunner Hillary Clinton but also features liberal Senator Bernie Sanders and former Maryland Governor Martin O`Malley.

176 New Species of Animals Discovered in India

  • Last year, field biologists discovered 176 species of animals from India which are new to science.
  • The list includes 23 species of fishes, 24 amphibian species like frogs, toads, etc, two species of reptiles, 12 species of arachnida (spiders) and 12 crustacean (crabs, lobsters, shrimps, etc).
  • Besides the new discoveries, 61 species of animals have also been reported for the first time in India.
  • The list includes 19 species of insects, 16 species of cnidaria (which include corals), 7 species of arachnids (spiders, mites, etc), 2 fishes, 1 reptiles, 16 species of Cnidaria (corals, etc).

Investment Routed from Mauritius to India

  • Tax treaty benefits are prompting investors to route their investments from Mauritius into India.
  • Between 2010-11 and 2013-14, Mauritius was the largest source of FDI, followed by Singapore.
  • However, FDI flows into India through Mauritius are estimated to have gone down from the last couple of years due to concerns of General Anti-Avoidance Rule (GAAR) and other steps taken by the Indian government.
  • FDI from other countries, including the US, the Netherlands and Germany, are increasing.

PNB Cuts Fixed Deposit Rate by 0.25%

  • State-owned Punjab National Bank slashed interest rate on fixed deposits by 0.25 percent on select maturities, a move which could be seen as precursor to a cut in lending rate.
  • The decision to cut interest rate on fixed deposits comes a day after RBI reduced key policy rate.
  • Following policy action, several banks, including market leader State Bank of India reduced its base rate or minimum lending rate to 9.70 percent from 9.85 percent.
  • Another state-owned Allahabad Bank cut base rate 0.30 percent to 9.95 percent, while Dena Bank, Punjab & Sind Bank reduced their base rate by and 0.25 percent each.

Final Close-up of Saturn's Moon Hyperion

  • NASA's Cassini spacecraft has made its latest and final flyby of Hyperion, Saturn's oddball moon.
  • The probe returned images from its final close approach to Hyperion, upholding the moon's reputation as one of the most bizarre objects in the solar system.
  • Cassini passed Hyperion at a distance of about 21,000 miles (34,000 kilometers) at closest approach. Cassini's closest-ever Hyperion flyby took place in September 2005, at a distance of 314 miles (505 kilometers).
  • Cassini will make several more close flybys of Saturn's moons in 2015 before departing the planet's equatorial plane to begin a year-long setup of the mission's daring final act.

Novak Djokovic Defeated Rafael Nadal in the French Open

  • World No. 1 Novak Djokovic defeated nine-time champion Rafael Nadal to advance into the semi-final of the French Open 2015.
  • In the last three years, it was Djokovic who was at the receiving end as Nadal emerged triumphant on all occasions -- in the 2012 and 2014 finals and 2013 semi-finals.
  • Now that he has crossed the most difficult hurdle, Djokovic has the best chance to win a maiden French Open title and complete a career Grand Slam.

AB de Villiers Named Cricketer of the Year

  • AB de Villiers won five of the nine major awards at a Cricket South Africa (CSA) function.
  • South Africa World Cup skipper was voted Cricketer of the Year for the second successive season. This is a feat no other South African has achieved.
  • His other awards included ODI Cricketer of the Year, Cricketers` Cricketer of the Year and Supporters` Cricketer of the Year.
  • Hashim Amla was named Test Cricketer of the Year and Morne van Wyk Twenty20 international Cricketer of the Year.

Ex-IB Chief Special Envoy on Counter-terror

  • The government has appointed former Intelligence Bureau Chief Asif Ibrahim to a key post in the Prime Minister’s office.
  • Mr. Ibrahim, will be the PM’s ‘Special Envoy on Countering Terrorism and Extremism,’ with a charter to liaise with governments in West Asia, Af-Pak and South East Asia. Mr. Ibrahim is one of the most well-informed officials when it comes to the Islamic world and its political structures. His role will include both the international and domestic dimensions of countering international terrorism, which is of great concern to the government.
