Climate Change does not cause Extreme Winters: Experts

  • Cold snaps like the ones that hit the eastern United States in the past winters are not a consequence of climate change. Scientists have now shown that global warming actually tends to reduce temperature variability.
  • Using a highly simplified climate model, they examined various climate scenarios to verify their theory. It showed that the temperature variability in mid-latitudes indeed decreases as the temperature difference between the poles and the equator diminishes.

RBI revised NBFC Regulations

  • The RBI revised regulations for non-bank financial companies (NBFCs) by directing them to get themselves rated by March 2016, and those failing to achieve investment grade ratings should not accept fresh deposits or renew older ones.
  • If a company's rating is downgraded, an NBFC should regularise the excess deposit with immediate effect, stop accepting fresh public deposits and renewing existing deposits.
  • In such an event, all existing deposits should runoff to maturity and NBFCs should report to the concerned Regional Offices of the Reserve Bank within 15 days.

Mars was once Inhabitable

  • The Mars rover Curiosity has for the first time found evidence of indigenous nitrogen in the form of nitrate in aeolian deposits and in two mudstone deposits on the red planet.
  • This discovery has great implications for habitability and, “specifically for the potential evolution of a nitrogen cycle at some point in Martian history”.

New Lobster-like Predator Found

  • What do butterflies, spiders and lobsters have in common? They are all surviving relatives of a newly identified species called Yawunik kootenayi, a marine creature with two pairs of eyes and prominent grasping appendages that lived as much as 508 million years ago -- more than 250 million years before the first dinosaur.
  • The fossil was identified by an international team led by palaeontologists at the University of Toronto (U of T) and the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto, as well as Pomona College in California. It is the first new species to be described from the Marble Canyon site, part of the renowned Canadian Burgess Shale fossil deposit.

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has been selected for the Gandhi Peace Prize for 2014 for its contribution to the country’s development through space technology and satellite-based services.
  • The award, comprising Rs. 1 crore and a citation, was decided after the jury for the prize met under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

  • Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee was conferred the country's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, at a special function at his residence.
  • The citation read out at the occasion described Vajpayee as a statesman known for a subtle sharpness that engaged, attracted and brought many together.
