US to Talk with Assad to End Syria War

  • As the devastating war in Syria entered its fifth year, the US said it would have to negotiate with the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as it aims to "reignite" new peace talks.
  • More than 215,000 people have been killed and half of the country`s population displaced, prompting human rights groups to accuse the international community of failing Syria.
  • Amid the dragging stalemate on the ground, the country has been carved up between government forces, jihadist groups, Kurdish fighters and the remaining non-jihadist rebels.

Overseas Inflows Hit Rs. 72,000 crore

  • Overseas investors have pumped in nearly Rs 14,000 crore into the Indian capital markets within a fortnight of this month, taking the total inflow to around Rs 72,000 crore since the beginning of the year.
  • Analysts expect the inflows to accelerate further going ahead following the passage of the Insurance Bill in Parliament and assurances in the Union Budget to revisit controversial issues like General Anti-Avoidance Rule.
  • As per the data compiled by the Central Depository Services Ltd. the Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) have bought shares worth net Rs. 9,134 crore during March 2-13, while in the debt segment, their net inflows stand at Rs. 4,567 crore, taking the total to Rs. 13,706 crore ($2.2 billion).

European Investment Bank to Set Up Office in India

  • Impressed by India's economic reforms and its growth potential, the EU-owned European Investment Bank is planning to open its first office in the country soon to significantly expand its operations.
  • Considered one of the world's largest multilateral borrower and lender, the European Union (EU) bank has already started negotiations with the Reserve Bank of India to facilitate low cost funding to various infrastructure projects as well as to small and medium enterprise in India.

Saturn’s Moon May have Deep-ocean Vents

  • As par scientists, Saturn's icy moon Enceladus exhibits signs of life-supporting hydrothermal activity which may resemble that seen in the deep oceans on Earth.
  • These findings add to the possibility that Enceladus, which contains a subsurface ocean and displays remarkable geologic activity, could contain environments suitable for living organisms.

National Lok Adalats Dispose 8.80 lakh Cases

  • Around 8.80 lakh cases, related to land acquisition, revenue and rural employment scheme MNREGA, involving an amount of Rs. 200 crore were disposed by National Lok Adalat held across India.
  • Of these, about 69,000 were pending matters and 8.10 lakh were at pre-litigation stage and had not reached the courts.
  • National Lok Adalats were held pan-India yesterday.

India Extends Support to World Disaster Management

  • India is committed to offer all support to the international efforts in disaster management and achieving substantive outcome in this direction.
  • This was conveyed by Home Mister Rajnath Singh to Japanese Minister for Disaster Management Eriko Yamatani in a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of 3rd UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.
  • The two Ministers exchanged views on possible bilateral cooperation in the area of disaster management, police training and modernisation.
