Chinese Woman to Head UN Aviation Body

  • Chinese international, air and space law expert Fang Liu became the first woman to head the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
  • Liu, who has worked for the Montreal-based agency in various capacities since 2007, will start her three-year term as ICAO secretary general on August 1.
  • She becomes the first woman ever to be appointed to the prestigious global position heading the United Nations specialized agency for civil aviation, and only the second ICAO secretary general from an Asia Pacific state.

Spectrum Auction Reach Rs. 96,000 crore

  • At the end of the seventh day of the spectrum auction the bids grew to around Rs. 96,000 crore for the biggest-ever sale of 2G and 3G airwaves.
  • As per the Department of Telecom, at present over 84 percent of the spectrum has been provisionally allocated to bidders at a value of approximately Rs. 96,000 crore.
  • The bidding is taking place in all bands. There is aggressive bidding going on in 1800 MHz, 900 MHz and 800 MHz bands.

IMF ups India's Growth Forecast

  • India's economy is recovering and its ability to withstand external shocks has improved. Terming Indian economy a 'bright spot' on the global economic landscape, IMF raised its growth forecast for the current fiscal to 7.2 per cent.
  • The new forecasts have taken into account a revised methodology adopted by India for calculating the GDP figures.
  • The Indian economy is reviving, helped by positive policy actions that have improved confidence and lower global oil prices.
  • As per IMF the Indian economy is the bright spot in global landscape, becoming one of the fastest-growing big emerging market economies in the world.

Fastest Unbound Star in Our Galaxy Found

  • Astronomers have discovered the fastest unbound star in our galaxy.
  • The unbound star, named US708, is travelling at 1,200 km per second - the fastest speed ever recorded for such an object in our galaxy - meaning it is not held back by gravity and will eventually leave the Milky Way.
  • The discovery of US708 sheds light on the mysterious double-star systems that give rise to thermonuclear explosions.

Subrata Paul to Lead India in Football World Cup Prelims

  • Goalkeeper Subrata Paul will lead the Indian team against Nepal in the first leg of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers first round, as coach Stephen Constantine begins his second stint with the Indian.
  • This will be Constantine’s first competitive assignment after being appointed as India’s coach for the second time in his career.
  • India is currently ranked 171 in the FIFA rankings.

Banned Lee Chong Wei Hopeful of Olympic Spot

  • Former badminton world number one Lee Chong Wei is hoping to be back for the start of the 2016 Olympic qualifiers in May after finally being given an April date for a hearing into his failed dope test.
  • Chong was provisionally suspended last year by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) after traces of the banned anti-inflammatory drug dexamethasone were found in his system during the world championships in Denmark.
  • Lee`s case will be heard by a three-member panel in Amsterdam in April, and if found guilty Malaysia`s leading sportsman will face a two-year ban.

Nitish Kumar Wins Trust Vote

  • Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar won the trust vote in the state Assembly amid walk-out by the BJP MLAs.
  • He won the trust vote with 140 votes in his favour.
  • Kumar, who was sworn in as Chief Minister of Bihar for the fourth time in February, had been directed by Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi to seek a trust vote in March.
