3600 Kids Orphaned by Ebola in West Africa

  • According to the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) at least 3600 children have been orphaned due to the Ebola outbreak in West African countries.
  • According to a report by UNICEF the number covers those who have lost both their parents in the hardest-hit countries -- Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
  • The Ebola outbreak that began in December last year has left almost 9000 children with just a single parent.

Animal Casualties in Kaziranga

  • The National Green Tribunal has ordered a ban on roadside shops and eateries along the animal corridors near Assam's Kaziranga National Park among a slew of directions in the wake of increasing wildlife casualties due to vehicular movement on the adjacent highway.
  • Taking exception to the state's failure to address the issue, it also directed the Assam government to submit records of animal fatality for 2013 and 2014 in March.
  • The state government has not taken effective measures to prevent animal casualty on National Highway 37 which is passing along the Kaziranga National Park stretch, one of the most prestigious national parks in the country.

Kirloskar Oil Engines Signs MOU with MTU Friedrichshafen

  • Kirloskar Oil Engines (KOEL) and MTU Friedrichshafen, GmbH have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The agreement focuses on exclusive cooperation on the building and commissioning of emergency diesel gensets (EDG) for possible future requirements of nuclear power plants (NPP) in India.
  • "KOEL being the largest genset manufacturer in India, this technological association with MTU will further strengthen KOEL's dominance in the area of back up gensets.
  • According to the agreement, MTU Friedrichshafen, GmbH will supply MTU engines and key components, and take responsibility for basic engineering and genset configuration. KOEL will integrate the systems and assemble and test the gensets on site in India.

Superfast 3D Printed Octopus Robot

  • Scientists have developed an octopus-like robot, which can zoom through water with ultra-fast propulsion and acceleration never before seen in man-made underwater vehicles.
  • The 30 cm long self-propelling robot is inflated with water and then rapidly deflates by shooting the water out through its base to power its outstanding propulsion and acceleration.
  • The robot is capable of accelerating up to ten body lengths in less than a second.

Ishant Sharma Fails Fitness Test

  • India's senior-most pacer Ishant Sharma was ruled out of the Cricket World Cup owing to a knee injury after he was the only one among the four injured cricketers who failed in the fitness test.
  • Ishant has been ruled out and will not recover in time to play the World Cup. As per regulations, we had Mohit Sharma as stand-by and he will be inducted into the World Cup squad.
  • Rohit Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja have passed the fitness test. However to confirm their match fitness, the trio will need to go through the grind during the warm-up games against Australia and Afghanistan.

Second Prototype Version of LCA-Tejas Tested Successfully

  • Hindustan Aeronautical Limited (HAL) successfully tested the second prototype of naval variant of Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)-Tejas.
  • The naval version of the LCA has a complex landing gear design which is significantly different from its Air Force version.

Record Turnout at 67.08%

  • Delhi registered record polling in the Assembly elections with a 67.08 per cent turnout, higher than the 65.63 per cent in December 2013.
  • According to reports more than 89 lakh people voted, 11 lakh more than in the 2013 elections. The highest turnout of 69.96 per cent was recorded in the North-East district, with the Gokalpur (SC) constituency recording 73.46 per cent.
  • New Delhi district recorded the lowest of 64.16 per cent, with Delhi Cantonment recording the lowest of 58.47 per cent.
