Brazil Facing Worst Drought in 80 Years

  • Brazil's Environment Minister Izabella Teixeira has said the country's most populous region is experiencing its worst drought since 1930.
  • The drought is also having an impact on energy supplies, with reduced generation from hydroelectric dams.
  • The states of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais are among the regions stricken most severely.

RBI Soaked up Dollars Post ECB Move

  • The Reserve Bank of India bought US dollars to prevent the rupee from appreciating sharply after the European Central Bank (ECB) announced a bigger-than-expected bond-buying programme to stimulate the region's economy.
  • The massive quantitative easing announced by ECB is expected to fuel a worldwide rally in stocks as investors regain appetite for risk.

Emission Standards for Ethanol Vehicles Soon

  • In its move to push more use of alternative fuel, India will soon notify the emission standards for vehicles that can ply on 85-95% ethanol blended fuel.
  • This will pave way for manufacturing of new engines that can use cleaner fuel and Indian vehicle testing agencies will give 'type approval' certificates.
  • The vehicle manufacturers will define the level of ethanol blend and it will be displayed on vehicles by putting a clearly visible sticker unlike CNG vehicles which cannot be identified quickly.

  • Scientists have found further evidence that comets harbor the building blocks of life.
  • They have collected the first close-up data that will help them understand how these celestial bodies evolve as they hurtle toward the sun.
  • One of the most exciting findings is the discovery of a surface covered by complex mixtures of organic materials possibly containing carboxylic acids, which also occur in amino acids essential components for life.

India has 5th Most Thinktanks in the World

  • India has the fifth most number of thinktanks in the world at 192, with six of them among the global top 150.
  • The US tops the list with 1,830 such bodies, followed by China (429), the UK (287) and Germany (194), the recently released Global Go To thinktank Index Report (GGTTI) 2014 has said.
  • The six Indian thinktanks in the global top 150 list are the Centre for Civil Society (CCS, rank 50), Institute For Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA, 100), Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (105), The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI, 107), Observer Research Foundation (ORF, 114) and Development Alternatives (129).
  • The annual rankings are compiled under the auspices of the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) at the University of Pennsylvania.
