China's FDI Growth Slows in 2014

  • China`s foreign direct investment (FDI) rose an annual 1.7 percent last year, although the pace slowed from 2013 as a cooling economy and shifting drivers of growth weighed on offshore investment flows.
  • According to reports China attracted a record $119.56 billion from foreign investors last year compared to $117.6 billion in 2013.
  • Investment flow into China is an important gauge of the health of the world economy and is also a good indicator of where capital is flowing within the country.

Microsoft Suspends Support for Windows 7

  • Microsoft's decision to stop support for the Windows 7 operating system will leave nine out of 10 Windows devices in China running with little or no official support.

  • Microsoft hopes retiring the 5-year-old operating system, which runs on half of the personal computers globally, will make way for later-generation products including Windows 10.

Ajay Singh Re-boards SpiceJet

  • SpiceJet's original promoter Ajay Singh returned to the airline with a long- term plan entailing an investment of up to Rs. 1500 crore, as Maran family agreed to cede control with transfer of over 53 percent stake in the carrier.
  • Singh would get 53.48 percent stake, currently worth about Rs. 500 crore, in the airline from the Maran family as part of the deal approved by the SpiceJet board.
  • The ownership change in SpiceJet is a positive development.

H. S. Brahma New Chief Election Commissioner

  • H. S. Bramha succeeds V. S. Sampath as India's new Chief Election Commissioner.
  • H. S. Brahma will be the Chief Election Commissioner of India till April 18, 2015.
  • He is the second person from the North-East to become a Chief Election Commissioner, the first being J. M. Lyngdoh.
