Violence in Bangladesh Ahead of Polls

  • Opposition activists on Saturday allegedly torched over 100 polling centres across Bangladesh in a bid to foil Sunday’s polls, which took place amid unprecedented security. The main Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its allies are boycotting the polls.
  • The 10th parliamentary election will be held for just 147 out of the 300 seats in 59 out of 64 districts. In the other constituencies, 153 candidates have won uncontested because of the opposition boycott.
  • Polling will take place at 18,208 centres. The ruling alliance of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reiterated its determination to take part in the election.

Kochi Takes its Place on World LNG Map

  • Kochi is now on the world LNG map with former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh dedicating the already operational LNG (liquefied natural gas) terminal to the nation. The Rs. 4500 crore terminal, which started functioning four months ago, was officially in January 2015.
  • The project, with a capacity of 5 MMTPA (million matric tones per annum), built by Petronet LNG Limited, materialised after eight years of hard work by the Central and State governments. Dr. Singh urged Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Petroleum Minister Veerappa Moily to coordinate with all the stakeholders to ensure that the full potential of the Kochi terminal is realised.
  • The terminal will contribute to making Kerala an industry-oriented and investor-friendly destination. It will also contribute to the efforts to promote clean energy and reduce carbon emissions, protecting Kerala’s environment.

  • The new feature includes what the micro blogging site thinks to be the best tweets to the top of a user’s timeline the next time he openshis Twitter account.
  • It works like Facebook’s news feed that presents status updates and posts in a ranked manner.

Bronze plaque put at SCG to honour Phillip Hughes

  • A plaque to honour Phillip Hughes has been unveiled on the wall outside the home dressing room.
  • The plaque features highlights from Hughes' career at the famous ground, where he made his first-class debut for the Blues in 2007 and played his first home Test against Pakistan in 2010.
  • Similar plaques of Sir Donald Bradman and Monty Noble also adorn the SCG.

INS Vikramaditya Enters Indian Navy's Area of Operation

  • India’s new aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya entered the Indian Navy’s area of operation in northwestern Arabian Sea.
  • INS Vikramaditya, which was accompanied by INS Trikand, INS Delhi and INS Deepak, fired ceremonial guns to salute the flag of the fleet commander Rear Admiral Anand Chawla, who was leading the flotilla of the Western Fleet that also comprised aircraft carrier INS Viraat.
  • INS Vikramaditya, which was commissioned into the Indian Navy in November 2014 at the North Russian shipyard of Sevmash at Severodvinsk, is now headed for its home port at Karwar in Karnataka.
