UN Council Overrides China to Add North Korea to Agenda

  • The United States and other Western members of the UN Security Council slammed North Korea's human rights record after voting to over-rule China's objections and add North Korea to the council's agenda.
  • The council meeting on North Korea came after a rare procedural vote sparked by China's objections to the inclusion of North Korea on the council's agenda.
  • There were 11 votes in favour, two against and two abstentions. Russia and China voted against the inclusion of North Korea, but as there are no vetoes in procedural votes of the council, the Chinese attempt to defeat the measure failed.

Birds Can Sense Arrival of Storms Way Ahead

  • According to a study, birds have the ability to sense the arrival of severe storms well in advance to ensure they are safe.
  • They listen to infrasound, associated with the severe weather, at a level well below the range of human hearing and flee.
  • The infrasound from severe storms travels at exactly the same frequency the birds are most sensitive to hearing.

Tech Mahindra Out of Money Laundering Cases

  • The High Court at Hyderabad quashed all money laundering cases filed by Enforcement Directorate (ED) against Tech Mahindra.
  • ED had filed cases against the erstwhile Satyam Computers Services Limited (SCSL) and its promoters.
  • ED's contention was that since Tech Mahindra had acquired Satyam, it automatically became an accused.
  • In June 2014, Tech Mahindra had filed a writ petition questioning the criminal prosecution commenced by ED against it.
  • The court held ED had failed to prove that Tech Mahindra as a company had any criminal intent in the alleged offence.

Govt. Eyes Rs. 1.47 Lakh cr from Auction of Coal Blocks

  • Government is targeting a revenue of Rs. 1.47 lakh crore from the allotment and auction of 92 coal blocks out of those being given out in the first phase to private as well as public sector entities.
  • The 92 coal blocks have geological reserves of 18,446 million tones.
  • Of the 92 coal blocks, 57 blocks are for the power sector and 35 mines are for non-power sector and captive power plants.

Abhinav Bindra Defends Air Rifle National Title

  • Abhinav Bindra and Vijay Kumar clinched a gold medal each in 10-metre air rifle and 25-metre standard pistol events respectively at the 58th National Shooting Championship.
  • Bindra shot a total of 208 to walk away with the top prize and defend his title in 10-metre air rifle at the Balewadi Shooting Range.
  • Vijay, a silver medallist at the 2012 London Games, shot a total of 571 to become the new national champion in 25-metre standard pistol category.
