Islamic extremist holds several people hostage at Sydney Café

  • Several people were on Monday taken hostage at a cafe in Sydney.
  • An Islamic flag was also reportedly seen hanging in the window of the cafe. Witnesses claimed hearing loud bangs that sounded like gun shots.
  • Hundreds of armed police have sealed off Martin Place and urged people to avoid the area. Dozens of police cars are at the scene.

Swiss Gold Exports to India near Rs. 1 Trillion in 2014

  • Amid concerns of bullion trade being used for routing of black money, Switzerland's gold exports to India have risen further and fast approaching Rs. one-trillion mark for the entire 2014.
  • The Swiss gold exports to India stood at over 2.8 billion Swiss Francs (over Rs. 18,000 crore) in October, up from about 2.2 billion Swiss Francs in the previous month.
  • According to data compiled by Switzerland's cross-border trade monitoring agency, this has taken the total Swiss gold exports to India since January this year to 14.2 billion Swiss Francs (nearly Rs. 93,000 crore).
  • This surge in gold shipments has made India the largest destination for the yellow metal exports from Switzerland.

'Hot Money' from FIIs Hits Rs. 10 Lakh crore Mark

  • Putting Indian markets on fire, the foreign investors have pumped in over Rs. one-lakh crore into stocks during 2014 -- taking their cumulative net investments here beyond Rs. 10 lakh crore.
  • As the year comes to an end the Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have made a net investment of nearly Rs. 1.05 lakh crore so far in 2014 and a further Rs. 1.6 lakh crore into debt markets -- resulting into a total of over Rs. 2.6 lakh crore (USD 43.4 billion).
  • According to experts the final tally for 2014 could be much better and there is also a chance of annual FII inflows hitting a new record high level.

Facebook Removes Bing Search Engine from its Platform

  • Facebook has announced its decision to remove the Bing search engine from its platform as it ends a four-year-long online relationship with Microsoft's search engine.
  • This move was prompted by a shift in focus aimed at helping users find what has been shared with them on Facebook.
  • However, both companies would continue to partner in other areas.

Germany Bag Champions Trophy Title

  • Germany clinched the Hero Champions Trophy title with a convincing 2-0 win over Pakistan in the summit clash.
  • Germany last won the Champions Trophy in 2007 edition in Kuala Lumpur and came close to the title two years later in Melbourne but ended second, losing to Australia.
  • Overall, it this Germany's 10th Champions Trophy title.

Rolene Strauss Crowned Miss World 2014

  • South Africa`s Rolene Strauss bagged the Miss World 2014 title.
  • Rolene Stauss was crowned by Miss World 2013 Megan Young, who also co-hosted the pageant with Tim Vincent.
  • The second spot went to Miss Hungary Edina Kulcsar and the third to Miss US Elizabeth Safrit.
  • India`s Koyal Rana could make it only to top 10. Priyanka Chopra was the last Indian to clinch the crown in 2000.

4th Phase Polling in J&K and Jharkhand

  • In spite of a boycott call by separatists and chilly weather, voters came out in good numbers to record a 49 per cent turnout in the fourth phase of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections that involved 18 seats.
  • The polling in the four districts--Srinagar, Anantnag, Shopian(all in Valley) and Samba(Jammu region) was four per cent higher than that in the 2008 Assembly elections but it was lower compared to the average 71 per cent in the first two phases and 59 per cent in the third phase.
  • The fourth phase of Jharkhand Assembly polls in 15 constituencies passed off peacefully with 61.65 per cent of over 43 lakh electorate casting their ballots.
  • Polling began at 7 AM in all the seats, ended at 3 PM in 13 constituencies while it concluded at 5 PM in Dhanbad and Bokaro.
  • The 13 other seats that went to polls in this round are Madhupur, Deogarh (SC), Bagodar, Jamua (SC), Gandey, Giridih, Dumri, Chandankyari (SC), Sindri, Nirsa, Jharia, Tundi and Baghmara.
