Drugs Released in Environment affect Plant Growth

  • According to a new study, the drugs we release into the environment are likely to have a significant impact on plant growth.
  • By assessing the impacts of a range of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, research has shown that the growth of edible crops can be affected by these chemicals, even at very low concentrations found in the environment.
  • The potential for these chemicals to influence plants is becoming increasingly relevant, particularly as waste management systems are unable to remove many compounds from our sewage. Drugs for human use make their way into soil through a number of routes, including the use of sewage sludge as fertiliser and waste water for irrigation.

BUSINESS AND ECONOMY

India Surprised this Year

  • According to the global financial services major, following two years of sub 5 percent growth, India's GDP is expected to be around 5.6 percent in 2014-15 and around 6.5 percent in 2015-16.
  • According to a report by Citigroup India has "really surprised" in 2014 and it might do so again next year as the country's GDP figure is expected to pick-up from 5.6 percent in the current fiscal to 7 percent in 2016-17.
  • The Indian economy picked up momentum, driven by business friendly Narendra Modi government, progress on RBI's financial sector reforms and sharp drop in commodity prices.
  • All these factors have been high on the radar of global investors with equity markets up 35 percent so far this year and a stable currency in the Rs. 59-63 range.

Consumer sentiment eases for 3rd month in a row

  • Consumer sentiment in India eased for the third consecutive month in November largely due to a sharp fall in expectations of business conditions in a year's time.
  • Consumer sentiment had picked up in the run up to the general election earlier in the year, but has failed to maintain the momentum.
  • The MNI India Consumer Indicator fell by 2.8 points to 120.9 in November from 123.7 in October, the lowest in 13 months.
  • The Modi government has been in office for six months, but there has so far been little lasting positive impact on consumer sentiment. Policy action may eventually feed through, although for now the outlook remains reasonably subdued.
