US-Iran Nuclear Deal

The United States and Iran began high-level talks ahead of a looming deadline for a deal on Tehran’s nuclear programme.
Despite the approaching deadline, Iran and the P5+1 group - Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States plus Germany are far apart on what capabilities Iran’s nuclear programme should have.
The West has as yet been unconvinced by Iran’s denials that it has never sought a nuclear weapon, while Tehran insists its atomic activities are for peaceful, civilian energy purposes only.

Biomass Burning a Major Source of Pollution in India

Vehicles, air conditioners and industries may be the usual suspects contributing to the rise in pollution levels across the country, but the practice of biomass burning is an equal threat, if not bigger.
A recent study assessing the effects of biomass burning on pollution in South Asia was conducted by Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and National Centre for Atmospheric Research in the US.
The study reveals that burning of agricultural produce leftovers and forests during the major harvesting period (between March and May) contributes up to 60% release of toxic gases such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide in the eastern region, including Myanmar, 50% in central India, 25% in the Indo-Gangetic region and 40% over the Bay of Bengal.
These gases are a precursor to another harmful gas, ozone (O3), which was found to be adversely affecting the country's crops and contributing to global warming.

RBI Tightens Norms for NBFCs

RBI has tightened norms for non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) by raising capital adequacy requirement and net owned fund limit, among others, with an objective to mitigate risks in the sector.
To streamline the regulations for the sector, RBI has also revoked temporary suspension on issuance of Certificate of Registration (CoR) to companies that want to conduct business of non-banking financial institution (NBFI).
At present the NOF requirement is at Rs. 25 lakh. In a phased manner, the NBFCs would be required to raise it to Rs. 1 crore by March 2016 and to Rs. 2 crore by 2017.

Safe Return after 165-day Mission

After a 165-day mission, three International Space Station (ISS) crew members of Expedition 41 have landed safely in Kazakhstan.
The crew members travelled 70 million miles and their mission included numerous scientific experiments and spacewalks. Aboard the station, the crew participated in research focusing on Earth remote sensing, advanced manufacturing, and studies of bone and muscle physiology.
They also set a milestone for station science by completing a record 82 hours of research in a single week in July.

Anti-Typhoid Gene Found

Scientists have found a variant of a gene that confers a near five-fold protection against typhoid fever, which affects millions of people each year.
The discovery came from screening the genomes of hundreds of infected people.
According to World Health Organization (WHO), about 21 million people are infected with typhoid fever, and an estimated of 216,000 to 600,000 people die every year.

Hockey India Announces First Ever Annual Awards

In a first for Indian hockey, the national federation has decided to have the 'Hockey India Annual Awards' wherein the top players in the men's and women's categories will walk away with a prize money of Rs. 25 lakh each.
Hockey India will be identifying and rewarding the most promising and potent players from the current as well as upcoming teams.

Kolkata's First Wax Museum

Kolkata got its own "Madame Tussauds" named ‘Mother’s Wax Museum’. Important personalities at the inauguration were Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan.
The museum is spread over 5,000 sq. feet, and is named after Mother Teresa. It houses 19 life-size wax statues of the state's most illustrious sons and daughters.
The museum will be officially thrown open for public viewing Tuesday onwards.
Veteran wax sculptor Susanta Ray has crafted the statues.
