Ancient City Ukek Unearthed

  • Remains of a 750 year old city called Ukek, founded by the descendants of Genghis Khan, have been unearthed along the Volga River in Russia.
  • The city was founded just a few decades after Genghis Khan died in 1227 and the empire split apart.
  • Among the discoveries are two Christian temples, one of which has stone carvings and fine ceramics.
  • Ukek was a multi-cultural city, where a variety of religious beliefs were practised, including Islam, Christianity and Shamanism.
  • The findings were presented at the European Association of Archaeologists' annual meeting in Istanbul.

25 Eurozone Banks Fail in Financial Health Test

  • Roughly one in five of the Euro zone's top lenders failed landmark health checks at the end of last year but most have since repaired their finances.
  • The European Central Bank found the most critical problems to be in Italy, Cyprus and Greece.
  • While 25 of the Euro zone's 130 biggest banks failed the health check at the end of last year with a total capital shortfall of 25 billion Euros, a dozen have already raised 15 billion Euros this year to make repairs.
  • Alongside Italy, regulators said three Greek banks, three Cypriots, two from both Belgium and Slovenia, and one each from France, Germany, Austria, Ireland and Portugal had also missed the grade as of end-2013.
     

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff Re-elected

  • Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff has been re-elected to a second term to lead the world's fifth-largest nation.
  • With 98 per cent of the vote counted, Rousseff had won 51.5 percent of the ballots. There are not enough outstanding votes left to be counted to allow her rival to catch up with her.
  • Dilma Vana Rousseff is the 36th and current President of Brazil. She is the first woman to hold the office.

Ocean Circulation a Major Factor in Climate Change

  • New research shows that it isn't just the atmosphere, but the circulation of the oceans plays an equally important role in regulating the Earth's climate.
  • The study revealed that the cooling of Earth and continental ice build-up in the Northern Hemisphere 2.7 million years ago coincided with a shift in the circulation of the ocean - which pulls in heat and carbon dioxide in the Atlantic and moves them through the deep ocean from north to south until it's released in the Pacific.
  • The ocean conveyor system changed at the same time as a major expansion in the volume of the glaciers in the northern hemisphere took place along with a substantial fall in sea levels.
  • The new findings, based on ocean sediment core samples between 2.5 million to 3.3 million years old, provide scientists with a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of climate change today.
  • The changes in heat distribution between the ocean basins are important for understanding future climate change, the team concluded.

Swiss Gold Exports to India Hit Record Rs. 70,000 crore

  • As banks in Switzerland come under greater black money scrutiny, the quantum of gold having left Swiss shores for India so far this year has reached a record high level of over 11 billion Swiss Francs (about Rs. 70,000 crore).
  • The gold exports from Switzerland to India stood at over 2.2 billion Swiss Francs (about Rs. 15,000 crore) in September alone, which is double the figure for the previous month, shows latest data released by Swiss Customs Administration.
  • As a result, the total Swiss gold exports to India since January this year has grown to 11.4 billion Swiss Francs, shows the data compiled by the Swiss government's cross-border trade monitoring agency.
  • As per Swiss government data, the total exports of gold, silver and coins from Switzerland stood at 347 tonnes (worth 6.62 billion Swiss Francs) in September. This included gold exports totalling 172.5 tonnes or 6.48 billion Swiss Francs.

  • Roger Federer outclassed David Goffin in the Swiss Indoors final to claim a third ATP title.
  • Federer is also chasing his chance to regain the world number one ranking from Novak Djokovic by season`s end.
  • In the last two months, Federer has won the Cincinnati and Shanghai Masters events and reached the US Open semi-finals.
  • His Basel title was his sixth here from 11 finals played over a span of 15 years.

Haryana Gets First BJP CM

  • Manohar Lal Khattar, took oath as the Chief Minister of Haryana, leading the first BJP government in the state since it was created 48 years ago.
  • A first time MLA, Khattar, who has a four-decade-long association with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and BJP, is the first Punjabi to become the Chief Minister of the state.
  • In the 90-member Haryana Assembly, BJP created history by coming to power on its own for the first time in Haryana, since its inception in 1966.

Centre Likely to Give Fresh Affidavit on Black Money

  • The Centre is likely to file an additional affidavit in the Supreme Court in the black money case.
  • The Centre will reveal the names of three Indians in the affidavit against whom prosecution has been launched for stashing black money in foreign banks. The other names which have been doing the rounds, including politicians linked to the previous UPA government, would be revealed only if prosecution is launched against them.
  • The government feels revealing all names without scrutiny about illegalities committed by them would be a violation of the right to privacy as any Indian under the RBI rules can legitimately deposit $125,000 in a foreign bank per year.
