In an attempt to test the overall skills and bring in more students from diverse backgrounds into the IIMs, major changes have been made in the Common Admission Test (CAT) this year.
This year, the examination will have only two sections — Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation and Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning. The two sections will be implemented sequentially with separate time limits. This year, the examination is of 140 minutes’ duration and candidates will have 70 minutes to answer 30 questions in each section.
There will be an on-screen timer. Once time ends for the first section, the students will have move to the second and cannot go back.
According to Professor Janakiraman Moorthy, Professor of IIM-Calcutta and convenor of CAT 2011, the new system will help students to judiciously allocate time to each section.
Mostly, students with good quantitative ability, particularly from engineering background, have been getting into the IIMs each year.
“In the new process, we have tried that students with good skills in every area make it to IIMs. But we will have to see how it works out,” Professor Moorthy said. Under this system, students cannot ignore verbal ability and logical reasoning. Further, the time that a student can spend on questions on quantitative ability and data interpretation has also been limited.
Till last year, there were three sections — Quantitative Analysis, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning and Verbal Ability — with no time duration fixed for any particular section.
