People usually attend college or university. In the world which we live in, its kind of mandatory for a person to go for higher studies after completion of their schooling. But what could be the possible reasons for this? Why has higher education become such a highly adopted culture worldwide? Let us take a look.

The primary reason for this is gaining knowledge and specialising in the field of your interest. As children we all go to school and like some subjects more than the others. These topics of interests are what keep our minds ignited for our lifetime. There is no better way to learn more about them other than going to a college or university. For example as a child I was always interested in science, basically life sciences. However as I grew up I started learning about various specific topics in it. I covered physics and chemistry alongwith biology. And biology too was further subdivided into zoology and botany. And with age and increasing diversification among the topics I got clearer about what was the one particular area that I was interested in. I figured out that getting to know about medical science and the ways in which it has helped mankind made me happy. But simple school knowledge failed to provide the insight I wanted to get on the subject. As a result, out of my urge to learn more I had to go to a university offering courses in pharmacy and medical sciences. In the 4 year course of my bacheolars degree I sure have come a long way and gained a vast amount of knowledge about it. After all it is intellectual and not physical growth that matters.

The second reason is to earn a good livelihood and build better careers. By choosing the right courses in colleges, people have better chances of finding jobs relating to them. Thus, being able to earn big bucks which help them live off the lives they want. A person having an educational degree has an edge over a non-degree holder as he/she is more thorough with the theoretical as well as practical knowledge of their respective job. This can be proved by the high competition faced by students wanting to pursue their degrees from top schools. It is a known fact that the better college you join, the higher pay package you get. Thus, everybody wants to join the topmost educational institute. A student graduated from Stanford will be living a life with a higher financial security than the one who never took up college or went to an average one.

Last but not the least, going to college or university helps one improve their skills. Colleges nowadays offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities, which can be embarked upon by the student. Not only special skills I think that a person subconciously also improves his/her social skills by going to college. The learning environment provided by colleges could not be found anywhere else. And by having to deal with such a large number of people daily, you are bound to learn a lot simply by interacting with them. Special skills like personality building, aethletics, management, work ethics and so on are easy to attain while you are in college. These skills not only add cookie points to your rèsumè, rather they make you a better individual.


Looking at the above points, we find one key connecting them all and that is, the simple joy of learning. If not colleges then where else could we find it. No place on earth can give you the ambient learning environment, bubbling with aspirants all over the place. Such a scenario can be best experienced and observed in the premises of large camupses. Thus, to specialise and earn a livelihood out of one's interest, it is indeed mandatory to join these institutions.
