Independent writing: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Grades encourage students to learn. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

Response:
The issue of whether grades encourage students to learn stirs up a heated debate between its proponents and opponents. Some people believe that marks indeed play a significant role in increasing students' learning incentive, while others oppose this statement by citing many cases of spontaneous learning. Both of these arguments make sense in their own right; however, I will argue in favor of the former statement that grades encourage students to learn because grades let students perform diligently, create a sense of competition to perform better and to help them know about weaknesses and strengths.

To begin with, grades motivate students to approach their studies in a deep and meaningful fashion. When a student feels that his grades are on the line, he will spend more time working on his assignments and will therefore absorb more information and comprehension. On the other hand, students who do not have to worry about their grades will achieve merely a superficial understanding of the topics they are studying. For instance, in my engineering second year I was assigned a major presentation. The assignment made up about half of my total grade in the class, so I approached my work with diligence and care. I wrote a compelling speech, assembled a detailed audio-visual component, and spent hours anticipating and preparing for every possible question that my classmates may have had. If the presentation had not been graded, I would not have worked nearly so hard in preparing it. Just like I was, students all over the world today are motivated to work hard by the chance to achieve high grades in their classes.

Secondly, grades create competition. Students compare their mark with their class mates. As a human, every student likes to be better than others. So, when a student gets lower grade than other, he or she would work hard to get higher grade than a classmate. In this way every student would work hard and take the study seriously. For example, I was always in top 3 students in class. I always worked hard to stick to the position and get better grades than all other students. In today’s competitive academic environment it is absolutely necessary for students to distinguish themselves. This demonstrates another way in which grades motivate students to excel.

Thirdly grades let students know about their weaknesses and strengths. By knowing their weaknesses in a certain subject or topic, they can work hard on that particular area and improve their grades. For example, I was weak in radioactivity topic in physics in class 12 which I came to know by my grades in a class test. I worked hard on the topic and achieved good marks in my final exams.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that grades encourage students to learn. This is because they force students to approach their studies with enthusiasm and diligence, they give young learners a way to distinguish themselves from their peers and let them know about their weaknesses and strengths.
