Summarize the points made in the talk, explaining how they cast doubt on points made in the reading.

The article discusses about the fascinating topic pertaining to some animals especially chimpanzees can recognize themselves in the mirror and provides few reasons of support. However, the professor explains that if one recognize himself in the mirror does not mean it is self awareness and we cannot really tell through some of the experiments whether it is self awareness or not and opposes each of the author's reasons.

First, the reading passage discusses that when series of experiments conducted on chimpanzees by exposing them in front of the mirror then in most of experiments they gave responses as there is another chimpanzee standing in front of them. In contrast, the professor provides information that we cannot get to the conclusion by this experiment. She states that when chimpanzees see the other chimpanzee through the window they do the same thing which is done by them in front of the mirror. Clearly a disparity exists between the article and the evidence exhibited by the professor.

Second, the article pushes forth the idea that through the "mark test" in which scientists get to know that chimpanzees can recognize themselves in the mirror as they recognize the red mark as being on their own bodies. However, the professor refutes this point by explaining that in the mark test, out of 11 chimpanzees only one touch the mark and one of the chimpanzees just rub the mark off even before seeing it on the mirror. So we cannot conclude from it that the experiment was successful. We also learn that there were some problems in the test as chimpanzees do the same behavior routinely which they did in front of the mirror and they touch their head and face a lot in daily routine. Same social responses which was shown in front of the mirror by chimpanzees is shown by them to other chimpanzees too.

In summary, while both the passage and classroom discussion provide interesting information with regard to experiments done on the chimpanzees for self awareness, a significant amount of evidence supports that those experiments are arising some doubts about the results.
