The topic is about the functional style of the architecture called the international style and this style is based on the emphasis of the function and rejection of the traditional decoration. In this architecture, the building is reduced to the a basic framework of the steel, skin of the glass and an open interior in which curtain wallls can be moved to suit the purpose of the user. This utilitarian beauty of the international style has resulted in booming of the buildings following this style in United States, particularly New York.

 

The international style has dominated in New York and streets are overpowered by the buildings following this style. But the critics of this style say that the promoters of this style have take the idea of the functionality to extreme and this have resulted in  ugly,cold and uninspiring buildings. As many of the buildings have been designed this way, the buildings such United Nations Secretariat looks cheap and vulgar to them. This syle has lost its elegance and it is seeming boring to them. Also, this style has received negative criticism from the public as well as famous architects. They have really changed the statemnt 'less is more' to 'less is bore'.

 

While the promoters of the international style states that the design of the building should be restricted to just functionality and they believe in the their utilitarian beauty, its critics emphasize that they have tken the concept of the functionality to extreme. Since very large number of the buildings follow this Bauhas idiom so it is making the buildings look ugly, cold and uninspiring. The critics are questioning if less is really more and emphasized that this style have already destroyed the beauty of the important buildings such as United States Secretariat.

 

So, while supporters of the Bauhaus style are convinced that the international style has really transformed the cities and important buildings and given them the advantage of the utilitarian beauty, the critics of this style have stated the style has become predominant to large extent in the cities of the United States and is now making the buildings look less elegant and boring. The critics have also criticized that the extent of functionality in this style is too far and it is damaging the stature of the important buildings like United Stated Secretariat.
