SAT is used as a prerequisite for admission into college or under graduation in US for any program.
Many colleges and universities use the SAT as one indicator among others - class rank, high school GPA, extracurricular activities, personal essay, and teacher recommendations - of a student's readiness to do college-level work. The test is administered several times a year.

SAT Reasoning Test takes three hours and forty-five minutes to finish. Each major section is divided into three parts. There are 10 sub-sections, including an additional 25-minute experimental section that may be in any of the three major sections.
Essay section is always administered as the first section and is 25 minutes long. It has roughly 30% weightage in the Writing section. The bulk of the Critical Reading section is made up of questions regarding reading passages. Critical Reading questions go in the order of the passage.
The composite score for the three sections is 2400 and the minimum score is 600 (200 x 3). All scores are multiples of 10. Negative marking for each incorrect answer is one-fourth of a point.
