India-Maldives Joint Military Exercise

  • The 13th edition of two week long joint military exercise 'Ekuverin' between the Indian Army and the Maldives National Defence Force commenced in Maldives.
  • Ekuverin meaning 'Friends' in Dhivehi language is a bilateral annual exercise conducted alternatively in India and Maldives. In 2023, it was conducted at Chaubatia in Uttarakhand in June.
  • The 14-day exercise, which concludes on February 15 is aimed at enhancing interoperability in counter insurgency and counter terrorism operations, and carry out joint humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.

Vibrant Village Programme

  • For the first time, Indo-Tibetan Border Police entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh governments for giving employment and livelihood opportunities to locals living along the India-China border. The plan conceived under the vibrant village programme (VVP) has so far covered 51 vibrant villages and 108 border villages for supplying vegetarian and non-vegetarian items worth Rs. 1 crore.

Indian Air Force and the Royal Air Force Executive Steering Group Meeting

  • In a significant stride towards enhancing military cooperation, the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Royal Air Force (RAF) convened for the Executive Steering Group Meeting, also known as Air Staff Talks, in London. The two-day event was a platform for reinforcing the defence relationship between the two nations, focusing on joint training, the exchange of ideas, and professional military education. 
  • The discussions were co-chaired by Air Vice-Marshal Suraya Marshall CBE from the RAF and Air Vice-Marshal Prajual Singh VM from the IAF. This meeting underscored the commitment of both air forces to not only maintain but also expand their mutual engagements in various military domains. 
  • Key areas of focus included: 
  • Joint Training Initiatives: Both nations explored ways to enhance joint military exercises, which would allow for better interoperability and sharing of best practices among aircrews and support staff. 
  • Exchange of Ideas: The meeting provided an avenue for sharing strategic insights, technological advancements, and operational tactics. fostering a collaborative environment for tackling mutual security challenges. 
  • Professional Military Education: Discussions revolved around the possibilities of integrating educational programs, including staff courses and specialised training modules, to benefit from each other's expertise in military science and leadership.

Rajesh Nirwan Appointed as Director General of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS)

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the appointment of senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Rajesh Nirwan as the Director General (DG) of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) under the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
  • A 1992-batch IPS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, Rajesh Nirwan brings a wealth of experience in law enforcement and security management. His career began with his posting as Superintendent of Police (SP), CID (CB), Jaipur. Over the years, he has served as the police chief in several districts, including Jhalawar, Sawai Madhopur, Tonk, and Kota, where he gained extensive experience in handling complex law and order situations.

Vice Admiral Rajaram Swaminathan Assumes Charge as the Controller Warship Production and Acquisition

  • Vice Admiral Rajaram Swaminathan, AVSM, NM assumed charge as the Controller of Warship Production & Acquisition from Vice Admiral B. Sivakumar, AVSM, VSM.
  • Vice Admiral Swaminathan was commissioned in Indian Navy in 1987. He is a post-graduate from IIT, Kharagpur. In a career spanning more than 37 years, he has worked onboard the Aircraft Carrier, INS Viraat, for more than nine years in various capacities.
  • He has held many important assignments including Fleet Engineer Officer (Western Fleet), General Manager (Refit) at Naval Dockyard (Mumbai), Director of Personnel and Principal Director Ship Production at New Delhi.

  • Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers and Apollo Micro Systems entered into an MoU for a period of five years to establish a business partnership for the joint research and development (R&D), co-production, export of Underwater Weapons & Vehicles, Underwater Mines, Underwater Communication Systems and Air Defence Systems and supply of advanced weapons and electronic systems for both defence and non-defence industries.
  • This collaboration is aimed at the development and production of cutting-edge technologies, including Underwater Weapons and Vehicles, Underwater Mines and Communication Systems and Air Defence Systems and Vehicles.
