Naomi Osaka Withdraws from French Open

  • Japan's Naomi Osaka stunned the tennis world by withdrawing from the French Open after deciding to boycott post-match media duties, explaining she had been suffering from depression for almost three years. Osaka said in the build-up to the tournament that she would not attend the obligatory press conferences for players after matches, saying the questioning by journalists impacts her mental well-being.
  • She was fined $15,000 by the Roland Garros referee for not hold a press conference, and Grand Slam organisers later issued a strongly worded statement warning of possible expulsion from the French Open and future majors if she failed to change her stance.

Nick Hockley is Chief Executive of Cricket Australia

  • Cricket Australia appointed Nick Hockley as its new chief executive officer almost a year after he was recruited on an interim basis, during which he oversaw the conduct of the high-profile tour by India amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Besides the India tour of Australia, he was also in charge of successfully delivering the domestic competitions in a complex situation brought about by the global health crisis, which badly affected CA's original cricket calendar.
  • CA said that Hockley has served with distinction as its interim CEO since his appointment last June after the departure of Kevin Roberts.

Asian Boxing Championships

  • Defending champion Pooja Rani (75 kg) was the lone Indian woman boxer to strike gold at the Asian Championships while three others, including six-time world champion MC Mary Kom (51 kg), signed off with silver medals in Dubai. The Olympic-bound Pooja (75 kg), who was competing in her first bout of the tournament after getting a bye and a walkover earlier, dismantled Mavluda Movlonova of Uzbekistan with a clinical performance.
  • Six-time world champion Mary Kom (51 kg), and tournament debutants Lalbuatsaihi (64 kg) and Anupama (81+kg) ended with second place finishes.

Hong Kong Woman Breaks Record for Fastest Ascent of Everest

  • Hong Kong mountaineer Tsang Yin-hung recorded world's fastest ascent of Everest by a woman in just 26 hours.
  • Tsang climbed the 8,848.86-metre mountain in a record time of 25 hours and 50 minutes in her third attempt.
  • Earlier in 2017, Tsang became first Hong Kong woman to climb the top.
  • She broke the earlier record of Nepali women Phunjo Jhangmu Lama completed the climb in 39 hours 6 minutes.

Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Srikath Miss Out on Olympics

  • Olympic medallist Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth's hopes of making it to this year's Tokyo Olympic Games ended as badminton's global governing body said that no more qualifying tournaments would be played due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Four Indians, PV Sindhu, Sai Praneeth, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, and Chirag Shetty, have qualified for the July-August Olympics in Tokyo. Olympic silver medallist Sindhu and 2019 World Championships bronze medallist Praneeth will represent India in women's and men's singles while Rankireddy and Shetty have qualified for the men's doubles event.

Mohali International Hockey Stadium Renamed

  • After a one-year wait, the Punjab Government finally announced to rename the Mohali International Hockey Stadium, Sector 63, after triple Olympian and Padma Shri Balbir Singh Sr. The stadium will now be known as Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium. "Due to certain circumstances, the project got delayed. We had decided last year to dedicate this stadium to Balbir Singh Sr. His contribution towards promoting hockey is immense and unmatchable," said Punjab Sports Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, who formally made the announcement on the first death anniversary of the legendary hockey player and coach.
  • Sodhi also said that a statue of Balbir Singh Sr would be built at the stadium to inspire young players. "It will be installed at the stadium entrance.
  • The minister also announced to start a scholarship scheme in the legend's name for meritorious hockey players of the state.

Lifter Achinta Shatters Record on Way to Silver

  • Indian weightlifter Achinta Sheuli shattered seven national records, including three senior marks, on his way to clinching an overall silver medal in the 73 kg category at the Junior World Championship.
  • The 19-year-old lifted a personal best of 313 kg — 141 kg in snatch, followed by 172 kg in clean and jerk — at the gold level Olympics qualifying event, creating three new senior and four junior national records. The Commonwealth Championship gold medallist bettered both his earlier personal best in snatch and clean and jerk by 2 kg each. He had lifted 309 kg (139 kg+170 kg) at the Asian Championships last month.
  • Indonesia's Juniansyah Rizki 349 kg (155 kg+194 kg) put up a spectacular performance, breaking the junior world record in all three events to win the gold medal, while Russia's Serobian Gevorg 308 kg (143 kg+165 kg) took home the bronze.

Shiva Thapa Secures 5th Successive Medal

  • Seasoned Indian boxer Shiva Thapa (64 kg) secured his fifth successive medal at the Asian Championships by advancing to the semifinals after out-punching Kuwait's Nader Odah in the last-eight stage.
  • Thapa won gold in 2013, bronze in 2015 and 2019, and silver in 2017. He is the most successful Indian boxer in the tournament's history.

IPL 2021 Will Tentatively Resume in 3rd Week of September

  • As per reports, the postponed Indian Premier League will resume tentatively on September 18 or 19 in the UAE with as many as 10 double-headers expected to be played during a three-week window.
  • The final might be held on October 9 or 10. The three-week window will be enough for the league to complete its remaining 31 games for the season, a win-win scenario for all the primary stakeholders including the BCCI, franchises and broadcasters.
