Constantine Tassoulas New President of Greece

  • Constantine Tassoulas, the former parliamentary speaker was elected as the new President of Greece. Tassoulas, a senior member of the ruling New Democracy party, secured 160 votes in the 300-seat parliament. He will take over from Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Greece's first female president, whose term ends in March. The position of President in Greece is largely ceremonial, but the selection reflects the political direction of the country's leadership.
  • Constantine Tassoulas has been a key political figure in Greece for over two decades. He has been a Member of Parliament since 2000, representing his hometown. He is affiliated with the centre-right New Democracy party and has held several ministerial positions, including Deputy Minister of National Defence and Minister of Culture and Sports.

Haryana Govt. Approves Nilgai Culling in Haryana

  • The Haryana government introduced new Wildlife (Protection) Rules allowing the shooting of male Nilgais, also known as blue bulls. This decision aims to address the growing human-wildlife conflict, particularly the damage Nilgais cause to agriculture. However, it has sparked protests from environmentalists and local communities, particularly the Bishnoi community, who consider Nilgais sacred. Critics argue that culling is neither ethical nor a sustainable solution to the issue.

Asia's 20 Richest Families: Mukesh Ambani Leads

  • Indians are increasingly making their mark on the global stage, not just for their expertise but also for their remarkable business strategies. A testament to this rising prominence is the inclusion of an Indian family at the top of Bloomberg's list of Asia's richest families, with several others securing spots in the top 20.
  • Topping the list is Mukesh Ambani's family with $90.5 billion in wealth. Mukesh Ambani oversees Reliance Industries, one of India's largest conglomerates.
  • Ranked second, Thailand's Chearavanont family has amassed $42.6 billion through its Charoen Pokphand conglomerate, which spans food, retail, and telecom businesses across Asia.
  • With a net worth of $42.2 billion, the Hartono family of Indonesia, third in the rankings, made its fortune in banking, primarily through Bank Central Asia, and from its origins in the tobacco industry. 

JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar Merge and Launch JioHotstar

  • JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar officially merged and created a new streaming platform, JioHotstar. The new service was launched by JioStar, a joint venture between Reliance Industries and The Walt Disney Company.
  • The merger brings together two of India's most popular streaming platforms, combining their content libraries, sports coverage, and technology to offer a wider range of entertainment.
  • JioHotstar introduced a new subscription model. Existing Disney+ Hotstar subscribers will continue with their current plans without any changes. The pricing for these plans is Rs. 149 for mobile, Rs. 299 for the Super plan, and Rs. 349 for the Premium (Ad-Free) plan for three months.
  • The new platform will offer a wide range of content, including Hollywood films and series from NBCUniversal Peacock, Warner Bros, Discovery, HBO, and Paramount.
  • This makes JioHotstar the only platform in India to feature content from multiple global studios in one place.

National Games 2025: Services Tops with 68 Gold Medals

  • The 38th edition of the National Games 2025 was held in Uttarakhand with 28 states, eight union territories and the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) participating. The tournament which started on January 26, came to an end on February 14.
  • Services topped the standings with 121 medals - 68 gold, 26 silver and 27 bronze. Maharashtra with 201 medals (54 gold, 71 silver, 76 bronze) came second and Haryana with 153 medals (48 gold, 47 silver and 58 bronze) occupied the third spot in the medals tally. Host Uttarakhand finished seventh with 24 gold medals.
  • Nagaland, Puducherry and Sikkim failed register a gold medal in the competition.

Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh Inaugurates Indie Haat

  • Giriraj Singh, Minister of Textiles, inaugurated Indie Haat at the National Crafts Museum and Hastkala Academy, New Delhi. Giriraj Singh, Minister of Textiles, remarked that Indie Haat is not just an exhibition, but a celebration of India's rich textile and handicraft heritage. Through this platform, artisans and weavers are provided direct access to global markets.
  • The Indie Haat event, which concludes on February 18, 2025, is designed to showcase India's traditional artistry to an international audience. The participating handicraft artisans at Indie Haat represent a diverse range of craft traditions from various regions of India. Indie Haat features a vibrant display of 80 different types of handcrafted and hand-woven products, crafted by 85 artisans and weavers from across the country.

Dharmendra Pradhan, Yogi Adityanath, and Dr. L. Murugan to Inaugurate KTS

  • Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan; Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath; and Union Minister of State for Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. L. Murugan inaugurated the third edition of the Kashi Tamil Sangamam in Varanasi.
  • The objective of the Kashi Tamil Sangamam is to rediscover, reaffirm, and celebrate the age-old links between Tamil Nadu and Kashi—two of the country's most important and ancient seats of learning. The central theme of this edition of KTS is 'Maharishi Agasthyar.'

West Bengal Government Introduces the "Nodi Bandhan" Scheme

It aims to create a resilient infrastructure that supports local economies and protects communities from the adverse effects of climate change.
