Global Innovation Index 2022: India First Time in Top 40

  • India rose to 40th among 132 countries in the Global Innovation Index 2022, jumping six places from a year ago, according to the rankings released by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).
  • This was mainly due to an improvement in information and communication technologies (ICT) services exports, venture capital recipients' value as well as finance for start-ups.
  • India's rank has risen by 41 places since 2015, when it was at the 81st spot.
  • Switzerland, the US, Sweden, the UK and the Netherlands are the world's most innovative economies, with China on the threshold of the top 10. Other emerging economies are also showing consistently strong performance, including India and Turkey, both of which entered the top 40 for the first time.

Akash Ambani on Time's 100 Emerging Leaders' List

  • Akash Ambani, son of billionaire Mukesh Ambani and head of India's largest telecom firm Jio, was named in the Time100 Next -- the magazine's list of world's rising stars.
  • He is the only Indian on the list. There is, however, another Indian-born American business leader, Amrapali Gan, also on the list.
  • The list highlights 100 emerging leaders who are shaping the future of business, entertainment, sports, politics, health, science and activism.

Yubi Partners SBI to Provide Credit Access to Priority Sector

  • Yubi (earlier, CredAvenue) partnered with the State Bank of India (SBI) to help grow the bank's co-lending portfolio. SBI would be integrated with Yubi Co.Lend, a co-lending marketplace that enables lenders to collaborate with multiple partners and disburse joint loans to the priority sector.
  • Yubi is a unified credit platform with a comprehensive product suite catering to all stages of the debt lifecycle.

Adani Green Commissions World's Largest 600 MW Wind-solar Plant in Rajasthan

  • Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) commissioned the world's largest wind-solar power plant of 600 MW capacity in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
  • The plant has a power purchase agreement with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) at Rs. 2.69/kwh for 25 years.
  • The project consists of 600 MW solar and 150 MW wind plants, it said adding it shall not only reduce intermittency of renewable energy power, but also help the country in optimal utilisation of transmission network.
  • In May 2022, AGEL operationalised India's first hybrid power plant with a capacity of 390 MW in Jaisalmer.

Bhowneesh Mendiratta Wins India's First 2024 Paris Olympics Quota Place in Shooting

  • Bhowneesh Mendiratta won India's first Paris 2024 Olympics quota place in Shooting, after he finished a commendable fourth in the Men's Trap competition at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship Shotgun in Osijek, Croatia.
  • Bhowneesh missed a world championship medal narrowly in the process, being the first to bow out with 13 out of the first 15-hits in the 35-shot medal match.

T20 World Cup: Jasprit Bumrah Ruled Out

  • India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the T20 World Cup due to a back stress fracture, dealing a massive blow to team's chances at the ICC flagship event in Australia.
  • Bumrah will be forced out of action for six months due to the back injury.
  • Bumrah, who played the second and third T20 against Australia, didn't travel with the team to Thiruvananthapuram for the series-opener against South Africa.
  • Bumrah is the second senior star player to be ruled out after Ravindra Jadeja, who is recovering from a knee surgery.

PM Modi Lays Foundation Stone of World's First CNG Terminal in Gujarat

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the "world's first CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) terminal" at Bhavnagar in Gujarat. This is a three-year-old project that is expected to infuse Rs. 4,000 crore in developing the existing port infrastructure at Bhavnagar.
  • The idea for the project materialised during the January 2019 Vibrant Gujarat summit when a consortium of London-based Foresight Group, Mumbai-based Padmanabh Mafatlal Group and Rotterdam-based Boskalis signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) for development of the CNG terminal.

ASCI Appoints N. S. Rajan as Next Chairman

  • N. S. Rajan, Director of August One Partners LLP was unanimously elected as Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI)'s Chairman of the Board of Governors. Saugata Gupta, Managing Director & CEO, Marico Limited, was elected Vice-Chairman, while Shashidhar Sinha, Chief Executive Officer at IPG Mediabrands India, was appointed Honorary Treasurer at the board meeting following the 36th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of ASCI.
  • The outgoing chairman, Subhash Kamath, will be a part of the Consultative Committee of the board, which, among other activities, mentors the new initiatives of the organisation.

Ex-Air Chief Marshal R.K.S. Bhadauria Joins Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor as Chief Nodal Officer

  • The Centre appointed former Air Chief Marshal (Retd) Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria as Chief Nodal Officer for the UPDIC project. The Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC) is a project under the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA).
  • The project is expected to reduce foreign dependency of the Indian aerospace and defence sector.
  • Bhadauria has over four decades of experience with defence services.

International Day for Older Persons

  • International Day for Older Persons is celebrated on October 1 every year. The day is celebrated to spread awareness about the importance of senior citizens in our society and to appreciate their contributions.
  • On December 14, 1990 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish October 1 as the International Day of Older People as recorded in Resolution 45/106. The holiday was observed for the first time on October 1, 1991.
  • The theme for International Day for Older Persons 2022 was 'Resilience of Older Persons in a Changing World'.

Women's Rights Activist Srishti Bakshi wins 'Changemaker' Award at UN SDG Action Awards

  • Srishti Bakshi, a women's rights activist from India, who travelled 3,800 km through the length of the country in less than a year to raise awareness on gender-based violence and inequality, has won a prestigious honour at the UN SDG Action Awards.
  • Srishti, marketer-turned-women's-rights-activist, was honoured with the 'Changemaker' award at the UN SDG Action Awards for "confronting gender-based violence and advocating for safe access to public spaces."
  • Bakshi embarked on an on-foot pilgrimage of 3,800 kilometers through 12 Indian states from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, not only to put a spotlight on the causes of violence against women, but also to empower women and reveal stories of resilience by conducting over 100 workshops focused on women's safety, along with digital and financial literacy.

IIT Gandhinagar, SERB Host a National Conclave on Women in Science and Technology

  • The Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), the Government of India and the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) organised a national conclave on "Women in Science & Technology: Fostering Innovation" for women researchers, scientists and engineers.
  • The event aimed to encourage women working in science, technology, and engineering fields to translate their innovative ideas into technology, instil the spirit of entrepreneurship in the participants, and facilitate discussions about translational research and its challenges.
  • More than 150 women scientists, researchers, engineers, students, and postdoctoral fellows from industry and academia across the country participated in the conclave. All those participants were recipients of SERB grants and fellowships and work on diverse research projects.

ASI to Seek World Heritage Status for Barabar and Nagarjuni Caves in Bihar

  • The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) decided to propose the Barabar and Nagarjuni caves in Bihar's Jehanabad district for inclusion in the tentative list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
  • These are considered to be the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India dating back to the Maurya period.
  • The Barabar Hills, located in the Makhdumpur region, embrace the cluster of four caves, together called Barabar caves. These are known as 'Lomas Rishi', 'Sudama', 'Vishwakarma' and 'Karan Chaupar' caves.
  • The Nagarjuni Hills comprising three caves are around two kilometre from Barabar.

SC Collegium Recommends Elevation of 3 Judges as Chief Justices

  • The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the elevation of three High Court judges as Chief Justices and transferred two Chief Justices and three judges.
  • Justice S. Muralidhar, the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court, was shifted to the Madras High Court. Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court Chief Justice Pankaj Mithal was transferred to Rajasthan High Court.
  • The Collegium, comprising Chief Justice of India U.U. Lalit and justices Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud and Sanjay Kishan Kaul, recommended the elevation of Jaswant Singh as the Orissa High Court Chief Justice and Ali Mohammad Magrey as that of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.
  • The Collegium also recommended the elevation of Prasanna B. Varale, a Bombay High Court judge, as the Karnataka High Court Chief Justice.
