George Floyd Death: Violence Erupts on Sixth Day of Protests

  • Violence has erupted in cities across the US on the sixth night of protests sparked by the death in police custody of African-American George Floyd.
  • Curfews have been imposed in nearly 40 cities, but people have largely ignored them, leading to tense stand-offs.
  • Riot police clashed with protesters in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Los Angeles, firing tear gas and pepper bullets to try to disperse the crowds.
  • The Floyd case has reignited anger over police killings of black Americans. For many, the outrage also reflects years of frustration over socio-economic inequality and segregation, not least in Minneapolis itself, where George Floyd died.

Birth of New Planets Witnessed First Time in Human History

  • Scientists have captured images of what could the first direct evidence of a planet being born around a young star.
  • The images, taken by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (ESO's VLT), show a dense disc of dust and gas around a young star AB Aurigae in which astronomers have spotted a prominent spiral structure with a 'twist' that marks the planetary maternity ward or the site where a planet may be forming.
  • The star AB Aurigae around which the new planet is forming is located 520 light years away from earth in the constellation of Auriga or the Charioteer.
  • A light year is the distance light travels in a year which is 5.9 trillion miles or 9.5 trillion km.

Proxima Centauri b Confirmed as Nearest Exoworld

  • Four years ago, scientists made one of the most exciting exoplanet discoveries so far, a rocky planet similar in size to Earth orbiting the nearest star to the sun, Proxima Centauri.
  • While the detection seemed solid, and now the ESPRESSO  spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile has provided that extra and more detailed confirmation.
  • The news was announced by the University of Geneva (UNIGE) on May 28, 2020.
  • The new planet is called Proxima Centauri b.

New Type Of Trojan Asteroid Discovered Near Jupiter

  • A rare kind of space object, which is something between an asteroid and a comet, has been discovered by astronomers. It has been called an active asteroid.
  • The newly discovered asteroid named 2019 LD2 has an orbit like an asteroid but the tail of a comet. While not entirely unknown, what makes 2019 LD2 special is that it shares Jupiter's orbit in an asteroid swarm known as the Jupiter Trojans.
  • This is the first Jupiter Trojan astronomers have ever seen spewing out gas as a comet would.

Rohit Sharma 'Honoured and Humbled' for Khel Ratna Nomination

  • Named the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2019, Rohit became the first player in history to score five ODI centuries in a single edition of the World Cup.
  • He surpassed MS Dhoni to hit the maximum number of sixes in international matches on Indian soil. Later in the year, being assigned the responsibility of opening the batting in Tests, Rohit became the only player to have twin centuries in his maiden appearance as a Test opener.
  • India batsman Rohit Sharma, was nominated for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, expressed his gratitude for being shortlisted for the honour by the BCCI.

Govt launched India's National Artificial Intelligence Portal

  • Ravi Shankar Prasad, the Union Minister of IT, electronics; communications, and law and justice launched a dedicated portal for Artificial Intelligence (AI) on May 30, 2020. The day marked the first anniversary of the second tenure of the central government.
  • The portal aims to aid the development of solutions based on Artificial Intelligence (AI). It will act as a one-stop digital platform for AI-related developments in India, investment funds in AI, sharing resource details of startups, companies, and educational institutions related to AI in India.
  • The Ministry of Electronics and IT and IT Industry body NASSCOM has jointly developed India's national Artificial Intelligence Portal called www.ai.gov.in.

Rohit Sharma 1st Ever Brand Ambassador of IIFL Finance

  • Rohit Sharma became the first brand ambassador of the IIFL Finance.
  • IIFL Finance is one of the leading non-banking finance companies of India which manages over Rs. 36,000 crore assets.
  • Rohit managed the first campaign by IIFL Finance, IMG Reliance promoting and advertising the people on Safety guidelines and rules that must be followed in the COVID-19 situation.

Music Director-Singer Wajid Khan Passes Away

  • Wajid Khan of Bollywood music composer duo Sajid-Wajid, credited with albums like Dabangg and Wanted, passed away in Mumbai due to complications arising from a renal ailment and COVID-19. He was 42.
  • Sajid-Wajid made their Bollywood debut with Salman Khan starrer Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya in 1998, and later went on to score many albums for the superstar's films, including Chori Chori, Hello Brother, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Partner, Wanted and Dabangg (1, 2 and 3). Most recently, Sajid-Wajid composed Salman's "Bhai Bhai" single.

Arun Singhal Appointed as CEO FSSAI

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the appointment of Arun Singhal as chief executive officer of India's apex food regulator Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
  • Singhal is special secretary, department of health and family welfare. He will succeed GSG Ayyangar who was briefly appointed as the CEO of the food regulator.
  • Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is an autonomous body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.
  • The FSSAI has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 which is a consolidating statute related to food safety and regulation in India.
