President Kovind Held Talks With Slovenian Counterpart in Ljubljana

  •  President Ram Nath Kovind held talks with his Slovenian counterpart Borut Pahor in the capital Ljubljana. He arrived in Slovenian capital after concluding his visit to Iceland and Switzerland. 
  • President will also be present during the delegation level talks and signing of agreements between the two countries. Mr Kovind will lay wreath at the war memorial.
  • During his two-days visit, the President will also take part in the India-Slovenia business event and grace a reception to be hosted by the Indian community.
  • This is the first ever visit by any Indian President to Slovenia after it gained Independence in 1991. 

Algeria To Hold Presidential Election On Dec 12

  •  Algeria will hold the Presidential election on December 12, 2019. Abdelkader Bensalah, the interim successor of ailing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who resigned following mass protests, announced the elections. 
  • The announcement comes after Army chief General Ahmed Gaid Salah insisted that polls be held by the end of 2019, despite ongoing protests demanding the creation of new institutions ahead of any elections.

Trump To Join Modi In Houston To Address Indian-Americans

  •  This is for the first time that the leaders of the two largest democracies would be addressing a joint rally.
  • President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will jointly address over 50,000 Indian-Americans at the mega "Howdy, Modi!" event in Houston, which is an unprecedented occasion, reflective of the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between India and the US.

Railways To Undertake " Massive Shramdan" Drive From Sep 17

  •  Railways will undertake - Massive Shramdan drive with main focus on collection of plastic waste. This Shramdan is for enhanced cleanliness, through collection of plastic waste from all railway premises and creating awareness for a greater impact against single use plastic.
  • Railway Board has also sent a letter to all Divisional heads, directing that this massive Sharamdan should be arranged at each and every station and nearby localities.
  • The Ministry has asked all Divisional Heads to provide plastic bottle crushing machines, at over four thousand stations by the 2nd October, 2019.

India's First Maritime Communication Services And CEIR System Launched

  •  Nelco, a security service provider company of the TATA group, announced the launch of maritime communication services. 
  • By this launch, Nelco became the first Indian company to provide broadband services in maritime sector. 
  • This communication service that provides uninterrupted Broadband internet to any maritime vessel sailing in Indian waters was launched by Union Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology and Law & Justice Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad in Mumbai along with pilot launch of Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) system to track stolen mobile phones.

Kaushal Dharmamer Clinches Myanmar International Series

  •  Indian shuttler Kaushal Dharmamer clinched the Myanmar International Series with a come-from-behind win over Indonesia's Karono Karono in a thrilling men's singles final in Yangon.
  • The 23-year-old from Mumbai, who had won the Hatzor International in October  2018, recovered after dropping the opening game to outwit Karono 18-21, 21-14, 21-11 in a match that lasted an hour. Kaushal, who has been troubled by injuries for almost two years, is currently ranked 187th.

World Men's Boxing C'ships: Kavinder Singh Bisht & Sanjeet advance to pre-quarterfinals

  •  In Boxing, Asian silver-medallist Kavinder Singh Bisht (57kg) and Sanjeet (91kg) advanced to the pre-quarterfinals with hard-fought wins in the World Men's Championships in Ekaterinburg, Russia.
  • While fifth-seeded Bisht edged past China's Chena Zhihao 3-2, Sanjeet defeated Scotland's Scott Forrest in an equally draining contest for a 4-1 verdict in his favour.
  • Now Bisht will square off against Finland's Arslan Khataev in the round of 16.

Sourabh Verma Clinches Vietnam Open Men's Singles Title

  •  In Badminton, Sourabh Verma clinched the Vietnam Open Super 100 title, defeating China's Sun Fei Xiang in a thrilling Men's Singles summit clash at the Ho Chi Minh City.
  • Second seed Verma recovered from a mid-game slump to beat Sun 21-12, 17-2, 21-14. The match lasted an hour and 12 minutes.
  • This victory marks Verma's second Super 100 win in the ongoing calendar year. He had won the Hyderabad Open earlier in August  2019.

  •  Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju flagged off Great Ganga Run-2019 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.
  • It was organized to create awareness about the river Ganga. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Shekhawat said, participation of the people in the run corroborates the fact that people are not only aware of the importance of water but are active to conserve the important resource.

Air Force To Receive Bunker Buster Spice 2000 Bombs

  •  The Indian Air Force will receive the bunker buster version of the Spice 2000 bombs by the end of the second week of September (2019).
  • The Spice-2000 bombs are scheduled to be delivered to the Indian Air Force (IAF) from Israel around mid-September along with the Mark 84 warhead and bombs which can destroy buildings completely.
  • India and France had signed a deal with Israel worth around Rs 300 crore for acquiring these weapon systems.
  • The supply of these weapons from Israel will happen around the time when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is likely to visit India for a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Justice P Lakshmana Reddy Appointed As First Lokayukta Of AP

  •  Justice P Lakshmana Reddy, a retired judge of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh High Court, was sworn-in as the first Lokayukta of the state after its bifurcation in 2014.
  • Governor Biswabhusan Hairchandan administered the oath of office to Justice Reddy at a function in Vijayawada.
  • Justice Lakshmana Reddy will be in office for five years.
  • The YSR Congress government amended the Lokayukta Act in the recent budget session, enabling appointment of a retired judge as Lokayukta, paving the way for constituting the corruption-probing body.

  • Second day of the week will be Suposhan goonj which will include functions like march past and taking pledge of giving proper food to children and ladies.
  • Other programs like cleanliness drive and awareness campaigns are also included in the week long schedule from 16 to 21 September, 2019.

International Day For The Preservation Of The Ozone Layer

  •  September 16 was designated by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.
  • This designation had been made on December 19, 2000, in commemoration of the date, in 1987, on which nations signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. People also inhale large amounts of ozone on this day.

  •  In Tripura, the three day long traditional Neermahal Jal Utsav concluded with eye catching boat race and swimming competitions at Rudrasagar lake.
  • Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb flagged off the boat race. 
  • Neermahal is a water palace built at the middle of Rudrasagar lake by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya in 1930 as his summer resort being inspired by Mughal style of architecture.

Renovated Jayakar Bungalow In NFAI Pune Inaugurated

  •  Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar inaugurated the renovated Jayakar Bungalow, a classic heritage site situated inside the premises of National Film Archives of India in Pune.
  • Speaking on the occasion he said that the historical building is part of glory of Pune city and the film researchers will certainly benefit from the site.
  • The bungalow, situated inside the campus of NFAI, comprises digital library, three film review rooms, and some antique articles of value. Director of NFAI, Prakash Magdum informed that the bungalow has been renovated with an outlay of 3 crore rupees. 
  • The grade I heritage structure, which was built in 1945, has a distinct Tudor style of architecture and was once home to Mukundrao Ramrao Jayakar, a barrister and the first vice-chancellor of the University of Pune.
  • It was then acquired by the Indian law society, before it was handed over to the Archives.

Pillar In Memory Of WW II-era Polish Refugees Unveiled In Maharashtra Village

  •  A commemorative pillar for Polish refugee families which had made India their home during World War II was unveiled at Valivade village in western Maharashtra's Kolhapur district.
  • As their country was ravaged by invading armies, around 5,000 refugees from Poland lived at Valivade, 235 km from Pune, between 1942 to 1948.
  • A delegation from Poland, including 12 of the surviving refugees, arrived in Kolhapur for commemoration of 80th anniversary of their stay in India.
