Wang Yi Reaches Kathmandu on a 3-Day Visit To Nepal

  •  China's Minister for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi reached Kathmandu on a three day visit to Nepal.
  •  He was received at the airport by Foreign Secretary of Nepal Shanker Das Bairagi. Mr. Wang will hold delegation level bilateral talks with his Nepalese counterpart Pradeep Kumar Gyawali.
  • They are expected to discuss entire gamut of bilateral relations. During the visit Chinese Foreign Minister will also pay courtesy calls on President of Nepal Bidya Devi Bhandari and Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli.
  • Nepal's Foreign Minister will host a dinner in honour of the visiting dignitary.
  • This is the first high level visit from China since new government formed in Nepal under Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli in February 2018.

India Announces USD 1 mn Disaster Relief Aid For Bahamas

  •  India announced a humanitarian assistance of USD 1 million to help people in The Bahamas affected by Hurricane Dorian.
  • The death toll from the calamity has risen to over 40 and is likely to increase even more, even as search and rescue teams are still trying to reach out to Bahamian communities isolated by floodwaters and debris in the wake of Hurricane Dorian.

President Kovind Reaches Iceland As Part Of His Three Nation Tour

  •  President Ramnath Kovind reached Iceland as part of his three nation tour. During his stay in the Nordic Island nation, the President will hold bilateral meeting with Icelandic President where memorandums will be signed to further the cooperation between the two countries.
  • The President will also deliver a lecture at the University of Iceland with a focus on environmental issues.
  • He will be meeting a business delegation and interact with the Indian community as part of the tour.
  • At the end of the tour he will take part in the India-Iceland business seminar. Both the countries have established cooperation in the field of renewable energy, fisheries, Information Technology, Biotechnology with a bilateral trade of 39.49 million US dollars in 2018-19.
  • The President will leave for Switzerland and Slovenia in the next leg of his tour.

Powerful Typhoon Faxai Hits Tokyo

  •  A powerful typhoon landed near Tokyo, killing at least two people and injuring about 40, as well as affecting hundreds of thousands of rush-hour commuters in the metropolitan area.
  • East Japan Railway Co., also known as JR East, had suspended all lines in the greater Tokyo area as Typhoon Faxai made landfall near the city of Chiba, as one of the strongest typhoons on record in the Kanto region.

Three Animal Species in India Extinct Due To Desertification

  •  According to some researchers,  three animal species namely Indian Cheetah, pink-headed duck and Great Indian Bustard have become extinct due to desertification in India.
  • The study by researchers was put forth at 14th meeting of Conference of Parties to United Nations - Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 14).
  • The UNCCD COP 14 meeting is being held in national capital from 2-13 September 2019 and is being attended by representatives of 196 countries with almost 5000 participants.
  • Around 40% of country's land is facing threat of desertification and over 30% of its land area has been degraded through deforestation, over-cultivation, soil erosion and depletion of wetlands, which is causing severe adversities to animals.

Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey

  •  Central Secretariat (CS) booked a place in the semifinals with a 4-2 win over Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) in the 2019 Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Chennai.
  • Meanwhile, Punjab National Bank (PNB) also sealed a semis berth after it drew 3-3 with defending champion Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOC) in its final group game.
  • With a semis spot at stake, both PSB and CS began aggressively as Harmanjit Singh opened the scoring for the latter in the 13th minute with a good finish at the near post.
  • CS came out all guns blazing in the second quarter as skipper Govind Singh Rawat pulled his side level in the 19th minute.
  • Dharmanbir Yadav (24') and Gaurav Kumar Singh (30') scored in the space of six minutes to put CS in the driving seat.

Charles Leclerc Ends Ferrari's 9-Year Wait For Italian GP Win

  •  Charles Leclerc ended Ferrari's nine-year wait for victory at its home circuit as he held off the Mercedes duo to win Formula One's Italian Grand Prix.
  • The 21-year-old Leclerc secured his second successive F1 race win in the process, having recorded his first ever Belgian GP.
  • Leclerc, who started from pole position, was roared on by the passionate Ferrari tifosi and he let out an equally joyful cry as he crossed the line 0.8 seconds ahead of Valtteri Bottas and 35.1 seconds ahead of championship leader Lewis Hamilton. Ferrari's last win at Monza came in 2010 through Fernando Alonso.

Bianca Andreescu Wins The U.S. Open, Defeating Serena Williams

  •  Teenager Bianca Andreescu became Canada's first Grand Slam singles champion with a rollercoaster 6-3, 7-5 win over 23-time major champion Serena Williams in the US Open final.
  • The 19-year-old Andreescu became the youngest Grand Slam winner since Maria Sharapova at the 2006 US Open, handing Williams a fourth consecutive defeat in the final of a major to again deny her a record-equaling 24th Slam title.

Fourth Conclave Of NEDA Held In Guwahati

  •  The Fourth Conclave of the North East Democratic Alliance, NEDA a constituent of the ruling NDA was held in Guwahati.
  • BJP President and Union Home Minister Amit Shah took part in the conclave along with Chief Ministers of North Eastern states. Apart from them, senior leaders of NEDA , Ministers and Chairpersons of various corporations of Assam also attended the conclave.
  •  Issues pertaining to strengthening the NEDA were discussed. Apart from that, several other issues  including the NRC were discussed in the conclave.

Amit Shah Chairs NEDA Meet In Guwahati

  •  Union Home Minister and BJP President Amit Shah said that North East Democratic Alliance, NEDA was set up to take NDA to the grass root level.
  • Addressing the 4th conclave of the Alliance in Guwahati, he said that entire North East has become free from the Congress.
  • He said that Congress rule in North East didn't do any development works. He said that the Congress party has made the  problems in North East more complicated for their personal benefits.
  • Union Minister for North East, Dr. Jitendra Singh hoped that the North East would be the most visible part of the India.
  • He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for uplifting the life of the people of North East. He also thanked them for scrapping the Article 370.
  • Assam Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal said that the North East Democratic Alliance has united the North East region. Under Narendra Modi, the entire North East is making tremendous progress.

  •  Sonia Dhawan, a former Paytm executive and the prime accused in an alleged extortion case involving the company's founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, has joined Paytm First Games.
  • Gamepind Entertainment, which owns Paytm First Games, is a joint venture between Alibaba's AGTech and Paytm's parent One97 Communications.
  • The case against Dhawan is still pending.

Actor, Kathak Dancer Veeru Krishnan Passes Away

  •  Actor and Kathak dancer Veeru Krishnan passed away in Mumbai. He was best known for his work in films like Raja Hindustani, Dulhe Raja, Akele Hum Akele Tum among others. 
  • Veeru Krishnan trained several actresses in dance over the years including Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif and Athiya Shetty, to name a few.
  • Priyanka along with other celebrities paid tribute to their "guru" on social media afer the news of his death.

Nissan CEO Set To Resign After Admitting To Receiving Overpayments

  •  The CEO of crisis-hit Japanese auto giant Nissan plans to resign, days after admitting he received more pay than his entitlement.
  • The reports said it was not immediately clear when Hiroto Saikawa would step down, as the firm struggles with the aftermath of the arrest of its former chief Carlos Ghosn on charges of financial misconduct.
  • Nikkei said Saikawa has told several Nissan executives of his intent, but that no date for his resignation nor a successor has been decided.

International Sudoku Day - September 9

  •  The World Puzzle Federation established International Sudoku Day on September 9, a day with tremendous symbolism for followers of the game.
  • Sudoku, which means "single number" in Japanese, is a logic-based number puzzle in which the objective is to fill a 9×9 grid so that each column, row and 3×3 sub-grid contains all the digits from 1 to 9. 
  • Although Sudoku is immensely popular, it is a fairly new game. Historically, number puzzles have been around since the 19th century, but Sudoku as we know it, didn't appear until the 1980s in Japan.
  • The game was unknown in the West until 2004 when Sudoku became a regular feature in newspapers.  

2019 Toronto International Film Festival

  •  The 44th annual Toronto International Film Festival is currently being held from 5 to 15 September 2019. The opening gala has been announced with the documentary film "Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band", directed by Daniel Roher. The festival will close with a screening of the biographical film Radioactive, directed by Marjane Satrapi.
  • Indian delegation at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2019 continued their deliberations with key personalities from the film industry and those associated with the festival circuit.
  • In their discussions with representatives of Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), the Indian delegation representatives, Additional Director General of Directorate of Film Festival, Chaitanya Prasad and Deputy Secretary of Information and  Broadcasting Ministry, Dhanpreet Kaur,  explored the possibilities and options of enhanced Indian presence at Berlinale 2020.
  • The representative of Berlinale was apprised of the policy changes in the film sector which are aimed at ease of shooting in India. 

First-Ever Helicopter Summit Held In Uttarakhand

  •  The Aviation Ministry organised the country's first helicopter summit in Uttarakhand's Dehradun where issues related to "enhancing connectivity through helicopters" were discussed.
  • Indian Air Force was invited to talk on 'Role of IAF helicopters in MEDEVAC (medical evacuation) at National level. 
  • The conclave was attended by the Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, Aviation Secretary P S Kharola, Joint Secretary in Aviation Ministry Usha Padhee, officials of Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the state's Chief Secretary.

  •  Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded a 16-year-old boy Priyavrata for becoming the youngest person to pass the "Mahapariksha" examination.History was created yesterday by 16-year-old Priyavrata son of Smt Aparna and Sri Devadatta Patil.
  •  While studying Veda and Nyaya from his father, he studied all Vyakarana Maha Granthas from Sri Mohana Sharma and passed 14 levels of Tenali Pariksha, Youngest to pass the MahaPariksha.
  • Tenali examination having 14 levels is taken twice a year by the students studying 'Shastras.'
