Khaleda Zia Barred from Contesting Polls

In a major setback to jailed former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, a top court ruled that a person jailed for more than two years cannot contest polls, effectively ruining her chance to participate in the December polls.
As per Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson, who is convicted in two graft cases, cannot contest the upcoming 11th general election next month.

Trump to Have Trilateral Meeting

US President Donald Trump will have a trilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Buenos Aires on November 30 and December 1.
The trilateral, which would be an expansion of the bilateral between Trump and Abe, is part of the series of meetings Trump would have later this week on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in Argentina. The annual meeting is being attended by leaders of the top 20 economies of the world.

Government to Sell Air India's Ground Handling Arm

A proposal for strategic sale of Air India's ground handling subsidiary AIATSL has been cleared by a ministerial panel.
The approval comes amid the government working on ways to revive the fortunes of Air India, estimated to have debt burden of more than Rs. 50,000 crore, including sale of non-core assets.
The Alternative Mechanism has approved EoI (Expression of Interest) together with Preliminary Information Memorandum for Air India Air Transport Services Limited (AIATSL) sale.
Proceeds from the sale of AIATSL would be used to pay-off part of Air India's debt.

Ashok Leyland Expands Footprint 

As part of its expansion drive, Hinduja Group flagship company Ashok Leyland has set up a new 3S facility IFAD Autos in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The facility would cater to the entire range of Ashok Leyland vehicles.

TechM Bags Deal from Coal India

Tech Mahindra has bagged a Rs. 270-crore deal to enable digital transformation of Coal India Limited (CIL).
The engagement, aimed at enterprise modernisation, would span a five-year period.
The project would be implemented in phases.
The deal also includes supply and implementation of hospital information management system across all eight subsidiaries of CIL, covering 21 hospitals.

NTT Data Acquired Stake in Atom

Japan-based NTT Data has acquired a majority stake in Atom Technologies, a payment services solutions company owned by 63 Moons Technologies, which was formerly known as Financial Technologies India Ltd (FTIL).
63 Moons Technologies has executed a share purchase agreement with NTT Data Corporation for sale of its 55.35% stake in Atom Technologies.
This signals NTT Data's foray into the rapidly expanding Indian payments market. 

India-China Amend Double Taxation Avoidance Treaty

India and China have amended the bilateral tax treaty which will help prevent tax evasion by allowing exchange of information.
The Government of India and the People's Republic of China have signed a protocol this month to amend the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) for the avoidance of double taxation and for the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income.

Sun Pharma to Acquire Pola Pharma

Sun Pharma will acquire Japan-based Pola Pharma for around USD 1 million to strengthen its presence in dermatology segment across the globe. 
The company has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Pola Pharma, which is engaged in research and development, manufacture, sale and distribution of branded and generic products in Japan.
The transaction is expected to close on or before January 31, 2019, subject to completion of closing conditions.
Sun Pharma forayed into the Japanese prescription market in 2016.

Neeraj Arora has Quit WhatsApp

Indian -origin Chief Business Officer Neeraj Arora has quit WhatsApp.
Arora has been with WhatsApp since 2011, well before the mobile messaging service's $19 billion acquisition by Facebook. An alumnus of the Indian School of Business (ISB), Arora played a key role in closing the acquisition of WhatsApp. He worked with Google before joining WhatsApp.

Carbon Dioxide Emissions Rising

According to the UN, Global efforts to tackle climate change are way off track as it details the first rise in CO2 emissions in four years.
The emissions gap report says that economic growth is responsible for a rise in 2017 while national efforts to cut carbon have faltered.
To meet the goals of the Paris climate pact, the study says it's crucial that global emissions peak by 2020.
But the analysis says that this is now not likely even by 2030.

NASA Lands InSight Robot

The US space agency NASA has landed a new robot on Mars after a dramatic seven-minute plunge to the surface of the Red Planet.
The InSight probe aims to study the world's deep interior, and make it the only planet - apart from Earth - that has been examined in this way.
InSight is now sitting on a vast, flat plain known as Elysium Planitia, close to the Red Planet's equator.

Hockey World Cup 2018

The 14th edition of the Hockey World Cup is all set to take place from November 28 to December 16 at Bhubaneswar, Odisha. India is placed in Group C alongside Belgium, Canada and South Africa and will begin their campaign against the latter on the first day of the tournament. Manpreet Singh will lead the Indian side in the tournament, while Chinglensana Singh will be his deputy.

Former Allahabad High Court judge Giridhar Malviya was elected as the Chancellor of BHU, which was founded by his grandfather Madan Mohan Malviya.
Justice (retd) Malaviya, a BHU alumnus, will succeed Karan Singh.

ABHM Will Contest 2019 Lok Sabha Polls Independently

The Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM) leader and granddaughter of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Rajashree Choudhury, said that the Mahasabha will contest the 2019 Lok Sabha polls independently. However, the organisation is yet to decide the number of seats it would contest in the general elections and has kept open the alliance possibilities as well.
On alliance, she said that it will depend on decisions and situation, and wondered which party will come close to ABHM's strict and distinct ideologies.
She also made it clear that the Ram temple issue at Ayodhya will be the poll plank of the mahasabha along with eradication of corruption, and establishing Hindutva ideologies.

Defence IPRs

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated an ambitious mission, "Raksha Gyan Shakti", to promote self-reliance in Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in defence.
Under the mission, the target for the year 2017-18 is to train 10,000 personnel of Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSU) and Ordnance factory Board (OFB) on IPR and facilitate filing of at least 1,000 new IPR applications.
