Saudi Arabia Increases India's Annual Haj Quota

  • The government of Saudi Arabia has increased India's annual Haj quota from 1.36 lakh to 1.70 lakh.
  • It is the biggest such expansion in the Haj quota in the last 29 years by the Saudi Arabian government.
  • The expansion of quota is effective from the current year.
  • The Saudi authorities had five years ago slashed quotas for foreign pilgrims coming from each country by 20 percent in view of safety of the devotees.

Five Pakistani Terror Groups Banned by US

  • The United States of America has designated few Pakistan-based groups as Foreign Terrorist Organisations, out of which some are also active in India, Bangladesh and other neighbouring countries.
  • The five groups are: Harakat ul-Mujahideen (HUM), Jaish -e- Mohammed (JeM), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

World Bank Cuts Growth Forecast

  • The World Bank has cut its 2016-17 economic growth forecast for India to 7% from 7.6%, citing a slowdown in consumption and manufacturing due to demonetisation.
  • The Indian economy is, however, set to recover its momentum subsequently, with growth projected to accelerate to 7.6% in FY18.

South Indian Bank Third Quarter Profit Rises

  • Private sector South Indian Bank posted 9.6 per cent increase in net profit for the third quarter of 2016-17.
  • The total income of the lender also increased to Rs. 1,737.47 crore during the quarter under review as against Rs. 1,560.98 crore in the year-ago period.

  • Two women, Kiran Bedi and Vimla Mehra, have served as DG of Tihar but it's for the first time that a woman has been appointed as the superintendent of a men's jail.

Narendra Kashyap Joins BJP

  • Former BSP Rajya Sabha MP Narendra Kashyap has joined BJP.
  • Kashyap was arrested last year in an alleged dowry death case.
  • BSP had expelled him soon after and he is presently out on bail.
