I was gleaning through my bookshelf to pick some books to read this weekend, then I realized that some of the books in my collection have the sentence formation and dense text very similar to that you may find in the GRE verbal section.

Must read books for GRE Aspirants

Of course I have emphasized on this fact several times that the Revised GRE emphasizes a lot on vocab in context. You canít just memorize several words and expect to score high. You have to decipher the meanings of words in context.

Glancing at my shelf, here are some suggestions (not in any order):
1. Lucky Jim, Kingsley Amis
2. What is the What, Dave Eggers
3. The Crying of Lot 49, Thomas Pynchon
4. Possession, AS Byatt
5. Middlesex, Jeffrey Eugenides
6. The Echo Maker, Richard Powers
7. The New York Trilogy, Paul Auster
8. White Noise, Don DeLillo
9. Liar's Poker, Michael Lewis
10. The Orchid Thief, Susan Orlean
11. The Honor Code, Kwame Anthony Appiah
12. Nickel and Dimed, Barbara Ehrenreich
13. The Critique of Pure Reason, Immanuel Kant
14. How to Be Alone, Jonathan Franzen
15. Napoleon's Buttons, Penny Le Couteur & Jay Burreson
16. The Executioner's Song, Norman Mailer
17. Gideon's Trumpet, Anthony Lewis
18. In Cold Blood, Truman Capote
19. Zero, Charles Seife
20. Complications, Atul Gawande
21. The Blind Watchmaker, Richard Dawkins
22. Collapse, Jared Diamond
23. The Year of Magical Thinking, Joan Didion
24. The Poisonwood Bible, Barbara Kingsolver
25. The Ghost Map, Steven Johnson

These are just some books I love and that are thoughtful in different ways. Would love to see suggestions from others to add to my own reading list!

Read your way to a high GRE Score. As you read try our GRE Verbal Tests to cement your reading skills.
