Indian Civil Services Exam

This exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for posts in IAS, IPS, IRS, IFS and other central services.
From 2011, new civil services exam pattern will be as :
Stage 1: CSAT (Preliminary Exam)
Stage 2: Main exam
Stage3: Interview

CSAT 2011 (Preliminary Examination)

It’s just a screening test for the selection of candidates for Main Examination

Important Dates:

»Date of Notification – 19.02.2011
»Last Date for receipt of applications – 21.03.2011
»Date of commencement of exam - 12.06.2011

Eligibility:

(1) Age - limits: 21-30 years as on 1st August of the year of Examination.
(Relaxation in Upper age limit for SCs/Sts, OBCs and certain other categories)

(2) Educational Qualification: Bachelor Degree of a Recognised University or equivalent(Candidates appearing in the requisite Degree qualification are also eligible for appearing in the examination; however, they are supposed to submit proof of passing the requisite qualification along with Detailed Application Form for Civil Services (Main) Examination)

(3) Number of attempts: 4 attempts is permissible for candidates belonging to General Category, 7 for OBCs and P.H. and no limit for SCs/STs

Fee:Rs. 50/- (Rupees fifty only) (No fee for Females/SCs/STs/Physically disabled only).

The CSAT will consist of two papers of objective type (multiple-choice questions) carrying a maximum of 400 marks.

The Question Papers (Test Booklets) are set in English & Hindi
Paper - I 200 marks 2 hours
Paper - II 200 marks 2 hours

Detailed Syllabus for CSAT 2011

Paper I
  1. Current events of national and international importance
  2. History of India and Indian national movement
  3. Indian and World Geography- physical, social, economic geography of India and the world
  4. Indian Polity and governance – constitution, political system, panchayati raj, public policy, Rights issues, etc.
  5. Economic and social development – sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives etc.
  6. General issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and climate change-that donot require subject specialization
  7. General science.
Paper II
  1. Comprehension
  2. Interpersonal skills including communication skills
  3. Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  4. Decision making and problem solving
  5. General mental ability
  6. Basic numeracy(numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc. (Class X level) and Data interpretation(charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. – Class X level)
  7. English language comprehension skills (Class X level)
