The respective ratio of salaries of Tom and Jack was 3 : 4 last year. The respective ratios of individual salaries last year and this year for Tom and Jack are 4 : 5 and 2 : 3, respectively. If the sum of their present salaries is $4,160, how much is the salary (in $) of Tom now?

Please type your answer before submitting.

The ratio of the salaries of A and B, a year ago = 3 : 4 Let their salaries be 3p and 4p respectively. Ratio between the individual salary last year and this year is given by: For A = 4 : 5 Let current salary be x so, 3p/x = 4/5 x = 15p/4 For B = 2 : 3 Let current salary be y so, 4p/y = 2/3 y = 6p Now, its given x y = 4160 Putting values, we get 15p/4 6p = 4160 39p/4 = 4160 p = 16640/39 A's salary = 15p/4 So, 15/4 (166400/39) = 1600 Present salary of A is 1600

The given information is that the whole of the trip of 75 miles was covered in h h/2 hours, or 3h/2 hours. How can this be right as it should be 2h h or 3h, because first third of a 75-mile trip took twice(2h) as long as the rest (h)??
