Unique medical experiment at ‘STEPS’

Maintaining its rich tradition of excellence in providing ‘quality and innovative’ education to its students, Ludhiana’s Top Careers & You (TCY), through its program for schools called ‘STEPS’, has brought in some innovative changes at its Sarabha Nagar centre.

Yesterday, during a Science class, ‘STEPS’ Class X students had an opportunity to get a hands on learning experience related to the anatomy of heart.

Interestingly, a preserved sheep heart was dissected in the classroom to educate the students about various internal structures of a human heart. This is the first time that such an initiative was taken by any educational institution in Ludhiana.

The demonstration was given by Mr. Ajay Walia, ‘STEPS’ Instructor, Life Sciences.

“Since a sheep’s heart is very similar to a human heart in its structure and function, we decided to conduct a dissection on it so that the students can understand internal structures of heart and relate them to their functions,” said Viji Raj, Center Head, STEPS, Sarabha Nagar Center, explaining the basic idea behind the whole concept.

This unique ‘dissection session’ got a very enthusiastic response from the students. Some students expressed the desire to have such sessions quite often. It may be noted that ‘STEPS’ has planned many such activities during the coming days to make the Science study interesting for the students.

It has been observed that normally when students read about heart’s structure and functions in their books, they are unable to get a clear picture about shape, size and other aspects of this vital organ. However, conducting activities and experiments like this would increase the interest of students, leading to effective learning and understanding of the concepts.

It may be noted that ‘STEPS’ is the premier program for Class IX and X of TCY. It has branches throughout Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir. In Ludhiana, it has centres at Civil Lines, Jamalpur and Sarabha Nagar.

Hundreds of free tests are available on the website, www.tcyonline.com, for different levels of school students which help supplement their classroom education and improve their level. These tests help the students in analyzing their progress by benchmarking themselves with other students in the country. Tests are also available for various competitive exams being held from time to time at the school level.

‘STEPS’ also trains students for the National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) and other Olympiads being conducted at the all-India level. It prepares students for tenth standard board exams and other talent hunt competitions. This program has been into NTSE training for the last seven years now. Students are being trained through postal, online and physical classrooms. So far, scores of students have passed out with flying colours.
